Average income in Surat, India’s manufacturing center, is the highest in the country, mostly due to income generated from the diamond industry. The average annual household income (AHI) in the city is Rs. 457,000 ($10,900).
This is an issue that often comes up here. 10K in india makes you middle class in a country where the basic living costs are far lower than here. There was a diamond industry strike recently and a 20% pay rise was passed through.
So the factories that require cheap labour are setting up in China and Africa - kinda wierd huh?
Meanwhile the median income working in West Australia in the mining boom state has just past A$100k (which was $95k last week, but dropped to only $87k this week)
