I am having a ring made to fit a 3.5 carat diamond. The color of the diamond is a "m", but it is an ideal cut and I love the color, and the sparkle....It was also the only way I could get a large stone in our budget. I am doing a setting similar to some of the JB Star halo rings, with some additional stones on the side. My problem is, I love the ring in platinum, but I wear almost exclusively gold and antiqued gold jewelry. I am trying to incorporate some gold into the ring, and having a hard time. I was hoping some of you would have suggestions. I was thinking that due to the color of main stone, should I consider doing some small brown diamonds on the sides, or maybe yellow diamonds? It seems that most of the two tone rings I have seen, don''t look that great. I also know that if you have enough diamonds on the top of the ring, very little of the metal shows, but I would like to see SOME gold or brown in there.

I am also wondering where the trends are going with jewelry. I was wanting to do some rose gold, but our jeweler has really tried to steer me away from that-saying that it will go out of style soon.

This is a 20th anniversay upgrade ring that I have wanted for years. Now that the time is here I think it is hard to make a decision. Any ideas?

Hi! I would personally not put any brown or gold on it... I would stick with plat and diamonds. I don''t see any problem with continuing to wear your other gold jewelry while wearing your new ring!

Hi Gail013,
I have a lot of yellow gold jewelry too. (as well as white but probably more yellow) I did my 25th anniversary upgrade e-ring in platinum. It is a halo where the halo has pink diamonds and it's set in rose gold. My wedding band which is also realtively new (2005) is 18k yellow gold. I originally thought I wanted to do platinum and incorporate yellow gold in it so I'd be able to wear the e-ring and wedding band together. I really couldn't find any two-tone settings that I liked. So, I wear my e-ring and wedding band at different times. The e-ring more for dress and the wedding band if I'm going to be more casual. I'm not sure about yellow or brown diamonds on the shank. What about yellow diamonds in the halo? I think yellow diamonds are really pretty. But like Gailrmv said if you go with all platinum (and all white diamonds) I'd just wear your ring with the rest of your yellow gold jewelry and not worry about it. As far as trends, I'm sure eventually yellow gold will be back in so get the metal color you like whether it is white or yellow. It's funny that you said the jeweler said rose gold will go out of style soon. I had a jeweler tell me the opposite-that's it's going to be in for a long time. (this wasn't the jeweler that did the rose gold on my ring) I won't care if my rose gold around my halo does go out. I love it and that's all that matters.

Good luck with your decision.

First of all I have to say "style shmyle" ugh!! I could go on about this alone for a long time but I''ll leave it to just these couple things... one, a friend with a marquise wanted to set it e/w back in the mid 90''s and was talked out of it by her jeweler because it was not in style and she''s *regretted* it ever since. Also, when people talk about how "dated" the rings are or they "look so 80''s" IMO if the people were *married* in the 80''s why NOT have rings that look like you were married in the 80s?? I don''t really get wedding rings as fashion I guess as much as others here do. Sure you want them lovely but then shouldn''t they transcend fads? Besides, what that one jeweler says means very little - it could be personal preference... I''ve heard yellow gold is "coming back" and so what, is everyone going to trade in their rings for yellow gold? I doubt it. If you *want* rose gold, who gives a flying fig what anyone else thinks likes or wants for themselves.

Okay, now that that''s over... I like stones that look intentional. I don''t like my J stone with white melee. but I''d like an M with white melee because there is enough contrast. I don''t know if there''s enough contrast between an M and fancy yellow melee but if you *like* that look... I''ve been looking all over for warmer melee... and I am pretty sure Wink can get it for you :) I thinkif you use brown stones with the M it might look best in yellow gold... I''m not familiar with the setting but I''m generally not a fan (personally) of two tone... but that is not a judgment against all two tone, just a personal preference. I have seen a few that I liked. I really like the look of unplated white gold against my J and my J is not a round so it shows *every* bit of its color face up. I imagine your M looks about like my J does lol I *love* the color! And I think it looks great with that very slight warmth of white gold. I think it is easier to mix white gold with yellow gold than plat and yellow gold. to me the contrast between plat and yg is too harsh. Again, just my preference - others LIKE that extra contrast. I think yellow gold makes my stone look very yellow, almost fancy... and plat makes my stone look yellow in a "that isn''t white" sort of way... the white gold just *embraces* the color and enhances it IMO. But there isn''t a lot of contrast there either... they match pretty well, but I like that :)

Cind11-

I happened to notice while running a search on Pricescope that I think you had your ring designed by Maytal! I just happened to email her, regarding having a ring made similar to the style of Beaudry. I do love that you went with a ''white'' diamond, and incorporated the pink stones too. I am trying to design something similar to the JB Star look with a blend of Beaudry. How do you like your ring, and what kind of comments do you get on it. It sure looks beautiful in the pictures.....

Hi Gail,

Yes, Maytal designed my ring. I am extremely happy with it. My friends who have seen my ring have said they think that it''s stunning. I was in a couple jewelry stores recently looking at watches and at both stores sales clerks commented on it and how beautiful they thought it was. It is difficult to make a decision because there are so many choices. I an not familar with JB Star but Beaudry does beautiful work.

Thanks Cind11-

Can I ask what the process was-did you meet Maytal, did you do everything by email? I have read only a few posts about her here, but not sure how to go about the process. I am in Mpls and she is in California. I would love to see some Beaudry rings in person, but no one here seems to have them.

Gail

Hi again Gail,

No, I was not able to meet with Maytal because I''m in Ohio. But I saw pictures of her work on Pricescope and she emailed some to me as well. We had to do everything via phone and email. It was a little weird but I was trusting that the good things I had heard about her were true. I also happened to do a search on here and I was able to get the email address of a guy who had Maytal make his fiance a ring and he put my mind at ease as to the quality of her work. My appraiser said the ring almost looked too perfect to be handmade (which it is) which I thought was quite a nice compliment.

Could you drive to a different city perhaps that might be more likely to to have designer settings that you could look at? (although it certainly seems that Mpls would be big enough to have upscale jewelry stores?)

Cindy

I was just thinking rose gold, too. Well, I have seen some two-tone gold rings that I really like--I have a rhr that is white gold with yellow gold bezels for the little diamonds, and I get compliments on it all the time. How about a white gold ring with halo in yellow gold? I like the idea of brown surround diamonds-that''s just me.

I wouldn''t hesitate to use Maytal, and I would question her about what would look best with an M stone. My tendency would be to get similar color or white diamonds. I do not think brown or yellow would be as pretty. Not sure I''d like rose gold unless the stone was white like Cindy''s. But a designer will have an eye for such things, so Maytal can probably advise you.
