Hello!
I have been lurking for a while and never had anything to post. Well, now
I have an issue, and could use the expert advice of the pricescope family. I have a .70 ct, D color, SI1 stone, which I love dearly. I''ve had it for almost 2 years, and have admired it and ogled it everyday since I got it. Just a few days ago, while I was cleaning it, I felt a tiny "nick" on the surface. I know for sure it was not there before!!! I know there is a small flaw in the diamond around where the nick is now. Can an inclusion grow and break through the surface? I asked a gemologist in my area and she said that sometimes a feather can get bigger and break the surface, but i''m not sure if that''s what happened. Is there anything I can do? I don''t want it to break even more!!! Any advice would be appreciated!!!

I would have you check for yourself and make sure that there is in fact a chip. Your gemologist that you asked is right about feather inclusions that they can indeed grow. At this point you don’t know if that’s the case. So check it out and get back to us and we will take it from there.

If your diamond came with a grading report, have a gemologist compare the current condition with the plot when they examine the stone. It may be possible to determine if an inclusion has spread during the time you have had the ring...possible especially if the original inclusion was near/at the girdle.

Thank you so much for your help! I have taken the ring to two places. The first was the place that I bought it, and they said that it was always there, (reaching the surface) and I shouldn''t worry. They looked at the certs and told me nothing was different. But, The certs say the inclusion was internal... Not external. I took it to a second place and they agree with me, that the certs say there was nothing external, so it must be new. I am taking it back today to get another gemologist''s opinion. I realize that it might not get any bigger and would probably be fine, but I don''t want to be that one in a million where the stone breaks in half or something!! I think i''m just going to swap it out.
Have a great day!

I have noted that it is sometimes quite difficult to see (even with magnification & reflected light) if an inclusion actually breaks the surface, so graders may not see/plot the inclusion properly. I don''t believe this is a huge issue however.
