I will be looking at a 2.1 carat GIA certed stone that scores 2.3 on the HCA. It has excellent polish and symmetry. It''s an H, SI1. However the comments section lists, twinning wisps, internal graining and surface graining not shown on the map. Individually, I don''t know if I would be concerned, but all three together seems a little daunting.

Any expert opinions out there on whether there is any vailidity to my concerns? I know my eyes will tell me when I see it. Also, do I need to be concerned about where the twinning wisps are located (eg near the girdle or on the sides)?

Thanks for the help.... This site has been invaluable to me in my search.

Where it says twinning wisps, internal graining and surface graining not shown in the comments section is nothing to worry about, these are non issues and insignificant so are only mentioned for the sake of completeness.

This quote may help you from expert John Polllard.

"Twinning wisps result from crystal distortion during growth. They're flat or ribbon-like cloudy areas, often radiating out from the diamond's center. Surface Graining is diamond structural irregularity which you could see with a microscope. Neither hurts the diamond's value and a GIA VS2 is a very safe grade, even if it has a more significant inclusion - such as a feather.

Many times a diamond grading report will list things as 'not shown.' The diamond's report is just noting that these things exist for sake of thoroughness. The characteristics which are 'not shown' are non-issues.

As an aside - though we call diamonds without visible inclusions 'flawless' we don't usually call clarity characteristics 'defects' (in the trade anyway). Mother nature was responsible and some people consider inclusions and blemishes natural 'fingerprints' which make their diamond special."

Graining quote from John.

"Surface Graining is structural irregularity. You can see it with a microscope. The graining may resemble faint facet junction lines, or cause a grooved or wavy surface. They look like polishing lines, but they often cross facet junctions where polishing lines don't. It is a natural characteristic of the diamond crystal, and not a reflection of the cut quality.
Many times a grading report will list surface graining, pinpoints, additional clouds, etc. as 'not shown.' The report is just noting that these things exist for sake of thoroughness. 'Not shown' means they are non-issues"
