Hi,
I''m a complete newbie to diamonds but have read everything here and done 2 months worth of shopping. I''m buying an engagement ring for my darling and have settled on the following:

1.5-1.75 carats
F color Princess cut
AGS or GIA certified
VVS2 or VS1
Ex Sym, Pol and Cut (polish being the least important to me)

I''ve read a fair amount from the forums and even met the only AGS certified jeweler in my area. I want to know if the following deal (an know in the sense of whether it "appears" to be reasonable) sounds in line with your estimates:

1.5 carats
F color
Triple excellent Sym, Cut and Polish
GIA certified
Princess Cut

Setting below with 1.75 carats of VS2-SI1 H-G color comprised of center ring and 2 bands, Platinum

Total price.. 16-17K. What do you think experts. Sorry for shamelessly asking for advice.. please excuse the request but this is the best site I''ve found with a plethora of information and uses. Thanks in advance..

If he is an ''AGS certified jeweller'' why is he selling you a GIA graded stone? Ask him to bring in some AGS000 princess stones.

Do you have an ASET image for that stone? A picture? Fancies are harder to buy than rounds, getting an AGS 000 princess will ensure you get a well cut, sparkly stone.

He called me back after 2 weeks and never had the stones in his office. I''m sure he''s reputable but I didn''t like the service. That and the fact he didn''t call me back until a week later when I''m shelling out some large money on a nice ring. The jeweler I''m dealing with is only GIA certified but has a good reputation in the Sacramento CA area.. and the service is excellent and patient. I''m pleased so far. Hence why I''m working with GIA stones.

Where in Sac are you going? (I''m in Roseville) I went to every jewelery store from Sac to Reno and didn''t find anything close to what I was able to find online.

The one exception would be Hamilton in the pavilions, though their pieces started at 80k and went up from there.

Hi Twilkens,

What you could do as you are viewing diamonds in person, is to invest a few dollars in an ASET scope.

This would be very helpful to you when viewing Princess or any other diamonds in the future for that matter, just a thought. Here is a chart which shows you how to interpret the results.

Also unless such high clarity is important to you, you could comfortably consider VS2 if you are open to the idea and even possibly G colour, but this is only a suggestion!
