@Platinum-blonde - I live in the U.K. and several of our supermarket chains have introduced self scan in some form or another.

@canuk-gal - believe it or not, when the scheme was first trialed, they found that people were more honest, not less! I suppose the thinking is that you could get stopped for a spot check, whereas, if you go through the checkout, people assume they won't as they're seen to be paying. I imagine if the supermarkets were making huge losses through the scheme, they wouldn't do it.

I worked in retail all through high school, college, and grad school. I'm much faster than most cashiers. Unless I know my ID will be checked or I have a complicated coupon to deal with I go to self checkout.

If I have a few items I use self check because the manned registers are usually full of people with full carts.
If I have a big cart full I go to a manned register.

@Austina - no wonder I've never heard of that before, I live in the States. I think it's a clever concept, and would love to see it adopted here...:))

I use self checkout only if I have a few things or the other lines are very long and I'm on a tight schedule.

I hate the sound of the scanning beep (I literally flinch every damn time - why is it so loud?) and I CANNOT STAND the stupid scale that sometimes detects when I've put my item in the bag and sometimes doesn't.

I love self checkout. I would rather not make chit chat with a stranger, and I think it is faster. Even if it's not I would just rather do it myself.

I prefer to go to a person. I only hate when that person then ends up a scowl faced unpleasant one... Then I wonder why I didn't use self check out.
