Hey guys & gals,

I''m back, and now much more seriously shopping...I''m in the market for a 2+ carat round cut diamond that is eye clean and sparkles like crazy. I''m hoping this can be obtained for ~18k or so if I want to keep to my budget of 30k for a custom 2 carat platinum mwm ring set.

Whatchya got for me? :)

Yes, they sure have.

May I ask, what setting is it you''re looking at that was going to run roughly 12,000.00? And can you put most of the budget in the stone now, and get a simpler setting? Then upgrade your setting down the road

I am looking at a customized version of this set: http://www.mwmjewelry.com/D_J_2-653ct_wed_set/

I would prefer not to sacrifice. I''d rather spend more if I need to.

Yes I think I have! I love square lines and princess diamonds but I could not find any rings that really excited me. The mwm ring set really caught my eye.

Ok, that would have to be the case to get a round 2 ct. Could you tell us what color preference you have? And just how high you want to go?

Color preference would probably be in the G,H,I group. Obviously the better I can get for my money that happier I''ll be! I suppose I''ll go as high as I have to, to get a nice 2 carat rock.

This one is gorgeous:

Hi Sharon,

Seeing your post here, I feel that I need to clarify.

When launching our new site a few months ago, we incorporated retail-pricing, mainly upon request of the PS-public. However, some weeks ago, this decision started to become difficult for us.

You must know that, being based in Belgium, we are obliged by law to post retail-prices which include VAT. We tried to avoid that by mentioning this under our diamond-listing. Still, we started to get some nasty questions about this a few weeks ago.

We have then decided to withdraw pricing-info from our site. Right now, we are arranging with Andrey, whom we personally met in Vegas last week, to add our complete inventory to the PS-search. I hope that this will solve your current problem.

Live long,

There are many great sources of beautiful round diamonds at relatively low prices. With I color and VS2 clarity, your 2.0 carat should be about $18,000 and higher color grades more (H VS2 closer getting closer to $20,000). The $12,000 for a wedding set does sound very high for that design. Once you have nailed down the price of the wedding set, you would know what your comfortable budget will be for the diamond.

You are right about prices being up in recent weeks. In talking to cutters this past weekend, they expect more price increases this year to make up for the cost increases in rough diamonds. You will be glad you are shopping now and not this time next year.

The mounting you are looking for is simple and elegant and if you are going to pay almost $12,000 I can assure you the jeweler is making an obscene amount of money. Depending on the total carat weight of the diamonds on the shank and the ringer size both rings in platinum shouldn't cost more than approximately $6,000.

A few more to throw in the mix.

Don''t let the mag photo scare you, someone needs to eyeball this to say whether anything shows or not.

Jonathan told me this is a nice one even though it is an SI2. I actually want this one!

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3154/

He made a video for me comparing colors and this J/SI2 is shown in there. Scroll down to the video where he compares an ''O'' color diamond to the ''J'' and a ''G'' cushion. Cool video!

I couldn''t really tell the differences in color from the video. Is that normal or do I have bad eyes?

It''s hard to tell in a video, it''s normal. You really need to see two well certified diamonds in those colors, ideal cut, in a variety of lights. So go out and see some in person, as that is the only way you''ll know if you are color sensitive or not.

We have a wonderful jeweler that can duplicate almost any mounting. The mounting you are looking for is simple and elegant and if you are going to pay almost $12,000 I can assure you the jeweler is making an obscene amount of money. Depending on the total carat weight of the diamonds on the shank and the ringer size both rings in platinum shouldn''t cost more than approximately $6,000.

Are you familiar with Mark Morell and his work? I think it would be a shame to have a jeweler attempt to duplicate his designs. I''m not sure many people would be able to match his craftsmanship and expertise. It is true that his work may be a little more expensive than most are used to, but I haven''t heard of anyone that was unhappy with the amount they paid and the ring they received.

That setting shouldn''t cost anywhere near $12,000 unless you are putting stones that are huge in the wedding band. And I urge you not to do that because it will take away from the e-ring stone. I wouldn''t put larger than 10 pointers in that wedding band, and I think that is around what is pictured. I am thinking $7000-8000 for that set would be more like it, because I priced that exact wedding band less than a year ago.

The 12k has a bit of a buffer built in. I was quoted roughly 10k for the set back in February, due to platinum prices (which are still high). Along with rising diamond prices, adjustments to the ring, shipping, etc I figured 12k was a safe estimate.

Hi Kayce,
You may find that many PS''ers prefer not to copy or duplicate the work of jewelers such as Mark Morrell and Leon Mege (for example).
Many consider their work to be really quite artistic and, although simple, the beauty is in the details.
Sometimes, we have seen these details attempt to be reproduced with unattractive results.
I am sure your jeweler is skilled, but with a healthy budget like DoctorK''s, imho there is no need to look anywhere but MM, where they fell for the design.

Umm..which inclusion? there are a couple small ones in this stone.
As its a GIA VS2, you can be sure that its eye clean. Infact, you probably will not be able to find the inclusions with a loupe either.
In person, I imagine it looks like a big , sparkly , yummy diamond!

No, you don''t have bad eyes. Jonathan sells only the best cut diamonds so they tend to look whiter than most. That is why I would own that J/SI2 in a minute. I also think that that O-color round in the video would look great in a 2-tone setting. That''s why I asked him to shoot a video.

I LOVE that Mark Morrell that you picked out. He is a superb designer. Good choice!
