Hi all,

I have been perusing the message boards here for awhile and this is my first post. I recently had the good fortune to pick up an AVC from the fantastic staff at Good Old Gold. It is a 2.11 ct O/SI1 stone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs-yN5xRsyc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

My hopefully soon-to-be fiancé is definitely unique and wants an understated antique sort of e-ring. I know she wants a solitaire setting, and I was hoping to float two questions to anyome willing to help.

(1) I am thinking of setting the stone in either yellow or rose gold, and I can't decide what will look better with the color of the stone, etc. would anyone with an opinion please share and/or post links/pictures?

(2) Althought I know she mentioned she likes the look/simplicity of a solitaire, will this stone look too "small" all by its lonesome on a size 8ish finger (i.e. should I be thinking about a halo setting?)?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Also, full disclosure, I created this profile under a pseudonym-- she is pretty sly and I'm trying to make this a suprise. You can call be "Jacob" :)

Seems like some people prefer to set yellow tint stones in yellow gold and brown tint stones in rose gold. It would look good in white/plat, too.

I don't think a 2ct anything could possibly be "too small."

Gorgeous stone!! I love cushions in halo settings. I think it would look fabulous. I'm not sure what color gold to get.

To me, lower color stones need a halo setting, and I think AVC's just look outstanding in halo settings! I'd be looking at Beverley K for a very nice antique style setting since GOG carries their line. They also carry Tacori, but those will run higher. But please put an O color AVC in a halo. And not yellow gold unless yellow gold is what she wears all the time. What jewelry does she usually wear and what color metal is it?

Your diamond is absolutely gorgeous and I remember when you were making the decision! I'd love to have a lower color AVC one day, but I would set mine in platinum because I like accentuating the beautiful color of the diamond.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I am still not completely sold on the idea of a halo setting, but I will definitely be giving it some more consideration. She does wear a lot of yellow gold and coppery looking jewelry (not hardly ever white gold or platinum). I did see a pic on on of the forums that I really liked, but I am not sure whether such a setting would look good with the stone I selected. Granted, the AVC I picked is considerably smaller, but would this type of solitaire setting still look nice?

I have 1.43ct AVC in the JbEG "modified Julia" setting - it has a little flair to it, and is super delicate in real life.

Wow, that looks incredible, thanks for the suggestion! I definitely think that I am leaning towards something more in that direction but perhaps in rose/white gold. Your AVC looks fantastic!

I love ecf 's setting! Its just lovely!

So I just got the stone today from GOG. It definitely has color, which I really like, although it is a bit of a chameleon. Here are some pics that I took The first is a side view in outdoor light (it is a cloudy/rainy day). The second and third are also outside light, one with a white background and one with a black background. The last one is under the light in my kitchen (incandescent light).

Also, on a side note, I took the stone to a mom n' pop jewelry shop near me that does same-day appraisals. They quoted me an appraisal/replacement price of 5,700 (which is a lot less than I paid for it). Having had a great experience with the staff at GOG, I dont think that they grossly overcharged me--is this something that I should be worried about? I know that AVCs come at a premium but a 200% markup seem like a lot. Being an amateur, its hard for me to say that the jeweler doesnt know what he's talking about, so I wanted to get some opinions. Does anyone else know of people who have had their AVC's appraised way under the price they paid for them?

Thanks again!

Well, go ahead and try to replace it for that much. You won't be able to, because it is a branded cut.

Well, I think if she wants a solitaire you should get her a solitaire and not a halo.

I think that stone would look amazing in rose gold. The rose gold solitaire pic you posted looks really pretty.

re: appraisal - firstly, a jeweler is not an independent appraiser and has an incentive to get you to think you can do better than him. Secondly, many, many jewelers are very snotty about lower colored stones and old cuts. They don't seem to realize both are pretty popular right now among a lot of jewelry aficionados, including celebrities. As well, if you didn't let them know it was a branded stone cut specifically for light performance, they could be judging it as any old cut stone off the street. So basically, I wouldn't worry.

Thanks everyone for the help! Do any of you have experience with Brian Gavin? From what I've seen, it looks pretty reputable? I've been looking at the following settings. I cant decide if the white gold bezel in the first link would accentuate the color of the stone or dampen it (making the stone look a shade or two whiter).

Thanks!

So I think I have officially narrowed it down. After a few more hours of researching, I think that I am definitely going with a bezel and most likely in yellow gold. I am headed to a local jeweler today who specializes in custom work. I am going to have him draw something up with the following inspirations. Let me know what you think!
