Hi Everyone!
I just came back from my jeweler today and had a quick question. About myself, I''m about to get engaged with my gf in one month in China, and since we both live active lifestyles and work in Africa, etc, we opted for a ''small'', simple engagement ring.
The ring will be custom designed based upon the following outline (please check link):
http://www.hkjewellery.co.uk/details.asp?type=ring&ID=497

The ring will be in (matte) white gold, with the baguette setting possibly platinum.

The big question is, how large would you make the engagement band (width) and the baguette diamond?

We looked at one that was about 2 mm to 5.5 mm, but that was too small we''ve decided. It was not deep at all and very cheap, as it only amounted to .13 carats. I''ve mentioned to him numerous times that I do not mind spending well above 1000 on the diamond, and we are certainly only looking for very slightly included qualities, etc.
But just by looking at it, I think that it is still too small, even with the engagement band being only approx. 2 mm in width?

Do you agree that the band should be more likely to be 2.5 mm in width and the stone be 3 mm to 6.5 mm approx.? Do you think, while still picking the best quality, that depth of the diamond does not play a large role?

Many thanks for all your help! I''ll make sure to relay your input to my jeweler on Monday, before him making the orders for more diamonds.

Cheers

Saemi

It''s a very contemporary setting and it''s squared off edges dont look like it would be comfy on the hand all the time...something to consider.

As for the wearing it in developing countries...I also work in Africa and I wouldn''t wear anything with a diamond in it there, period. Both for safety reasons and for moral reasons. I do have a half eternity band that I''ve been wearing for years and I do wear it on assignments in Africa, however, I do so only because I can twist it around and people can only see a solid metal band. When I am in Asia, I generally wear it with the diamonds out because it isn''t uncommon to have a small diamond or few on one''s wedding band there. I''m not sure how big this baguette is in real life but the ring, IMO, is so unusual that it really stands out anyway, thus drawing attention where you probably dont want to draw it? Have you considered a simple band with one diamond in it, that can be twisted around to the inside of the hand when one feels the need to do so?

uh boy or should I say surfergirl.. I think you really have a great point!

Concerning the shape of the ring, I am really worried about that too, but I just figured one might get used to it (especially if I get the edges toned down).

The reason you got me ''sweating'' though right now is cause I checked out that very simple tiffany ring, and i think you have a really good point... and besides it looks even exceptionally beautiful.. oh well, again the stone on the baguette ring is not big (2.5 x 6 mm), but certainly large enough to be noticed. I agree that it really might not be appropriate to wear even a small ring like that in Africa.

Well, you certainly got me thinking, which is really helpful! Glad to hear that not only posts that show of 1+ carat diamond rings are getting replies... haha
