Hello all. I have been reading through the archives here for a while and am ready to pull the trigger and get a diamond for an engagement ring within the next few days. My budget for the rock is ~6000. Trying to stay in the $7000 range for the whole package. The most important things to me are brilliance (I want to stay with an ideal diamond in the G-H color range) that is EYE clean. I really am not concerned with inclusions seen on microscopes, so to that end, an SI1 works for my needs. I have been searching, re-searching, etc. and have a decent grasp on the diamond thing, but still am very new and unexperienced. I used the pricescope search and found this rock:

GIA cert, $5700
. Shape: Round
. Carat: 1.24
. Depth %: 62
. Table %: 57
. Girdle: TN-STK
. Measurements: 6.86-6.91X4.27
. Polish: Excellent
. Symmetry: Excellent
. Culet: None
. Fluorescence: Medium or Moderate

How does this sound to the more seasoned/knowledgeable?

Also, this is the setting I am interested in (not necessarily this JA one, but this is pretty much the exact style I am after): http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/open-prong-Side-Stones-ring.html

I very much appreciate your time and feedback and if you have any suggestions please let me know. I am a graduate student with tons of student loan debt, but I won''t let that compromise the quality of the diamond I get my lady.

Hi jman,

Can you get us the cut grade, and the crown and pavilion angles please? Then we can better assess the stone.

My puter won''t copy and paste, so I can''t see your setting style unfortunately.

What is the crown and pavilion angles for this stone?

Ok, found your stone. CA 34, PA 41.4. Not that great a combination.

Let me see if I can find anything else.

Scratch that. Not the same.

Did you request an Idealscope Image for the stone? If so, can you post it here.

Maybe if I rephrased--

What characteristics in a ring should I be looking for to make my ring stand out if I''m in the $6000 range for a 1.2-1.3ct/G-H/Ideal/SI1 diamond?

There is not enough information on the diamond to form any kind of opinion on the stone. If you like the setting from JA, I would recommend looking at their diamonds so that there are no issues with setting and warranty.

EDT: Maybe one of these stones--you can ask James Allen for Idealscope images

Juiceman,

It''s frequently helpful to use the search by cut database to help give you some good ideas, one of which would be this one...also giving you same vendor for the ring you''ve picked out. A problem with the diamond you''ve identified is that it is virtual, not in house for WF, and so less info is available for it until they check it out for you.

Using that db, this one will turn up for you ($6276 wire priced), slightly funky, but showing sold, so unless you''ve got it on hold, not much to consider about it. Also, if you decide to include SI2 options in your search, this one would come up (at $6041 wire priced), but I was surprised to see it saying that clouds helped establish the clarity grade, and I would prefer to not see that, ACA or not. So, without searching beyond the search by cut db presentation, I do like that first one from JA.
