I''ve been researching diamond engagement rings for some time now. I''m a smart shopper and don''t want to throw away money so I started out by shopping at local jewelry stores and searching for loose diamonds through Pricescope. I ended up at Tiffany''s, which is where we''ll purchase my engagement ring. I am not a moron who stumbled into Tiffany''s b/c she didn''t know any better and was attracted to some fancy blue box. I could care less about the name engraved on the inside of my band which no one will ever see. And I don''t intend to brag to people that I got my ring at Tiffany. Not all people who shop at Tiffany are lazy or uneducated about diamonds. I''m well educated about diamonds and that''s exactly why I went to Tiffany.

When you walk in, it is a pleasure to shop at their store. In my experience at two different Tiffany stores, the salespeople were not at all pushy and were even suggesting some less expensive rings that fit better on my finger. Additionally, Tiffany has a 6 month interest free payment plan, which none of the other jewelry stores I went into offered. And I can walk into any Tiffany anywhere in the world and they''ll clean my ring. A local jeweler, on the other hand, might go out of business, or move, or pass away and then you''re left with nothing. These are the things that are important to me, and the reason I went to Tiffany.

I went into Tiffany thinking I''d never be able to afford anything and I ended up finding my perfect ring for less than I had budgeted. I''m getting a shared-setting half-circle platinum ring with 7 round brilliant diamonds G VS for a total carat weight of .91. The ring is $5400. Is that overpriced? If so, I may have found the same ring online for a little less money, but I''d rather make a major purchase from a live person than over the internet and know that the place I bought it from will be around for at least another 175 years.

kudos...and congrats.

That''s wonderful for you. congrats..

Welcome! I've been a Tiffany customer for a long time and have always had good experiences with them. Everyone in my local Tif's has always been knowledgeable and helpful.

Great for you! I do like Tiffany''s, I just think they''re overpriced. It depends what is most important to you. I have a half eternity Lucida diamond band from them. Bought it before ever hearing of Pricescope. Did I think I overpaid at the time? Nope. Do I know I overpaid now? Yep. Does that make me love my ring any less? No, though I woulda liked to have that extra money now! They have beautiful things. If you love those things and are willing to pay the price, nobody is going to argue with you!

I just wanted to say congrats. I have only had good experiences there and will continue to shop there. I really like going in there and have only been very satisified with it all...

I love Tiff''s too. Don''t know that I''d buy a major rock there but who knows?

The important thing is that you are happy. Where you did the shopping really doesn''t matter.

Now where are the pics?????

I also have always enjoyed Tiffany''s products and service; in fact I am wearing my favorite earrings from Tiffany''s now.

cheers--Sharon

As long as you''re happy with the purchases and Tiffany''s advantageous outweighed it''s disadvantages in your mind, then there''s nothing wrong with that.

Other stores being a "little" cheaper than Tiffany''s is all relative anyways. If you can afford it, more power to you. When I comparison shopped, all the diamonds seemed to have about a 50% premium or higher which was a little too steep for my blood. But that''s just me. There''s no "value" diamond anyways. As a luxury good, you can always argue that any diamond, no matter how cheap, is overpriced. I also paid more than online stores cuz of the service and other intangible things like that, but it was more in the order of 3%. One day, I hope to make enough money to buy some obscene rock from Harry Winston or whoever for my wife without looking at the price tag.

Welcome misskiss! I also am truly happy you found what you wanted at Tiffany''s. It is certainly one of the finest jewelry stores in the world. We all have different values and make different choices about how and where we spend money. I think this crew is pretty happy for everyone when they present a new ring here! I happen to be looking for similar rings, and I like a 5 stone, shared prong, ideal cut, F VS2, and the 1.0 carat price is $2800 for platinum at Dimend Scaasi (which is also a fine jewelry store in Chicago). The 2 carat version (five 40 point stones) is $5500 in platinum. I did look at Tiffany''s rings as well because their classic styles appeal to me greatly, but we are talking basically double the price for what I believe is a similar quality piece. So while I respect your choice and sincerely look forward to seeing a picture of your beautiful ring, I hope you can understand that some of us make another choice. Both choices are perfectly okay and we don''t need to feel defensive.
