The NYT is tracking ”breakthrough” COVID deaths—deaths of those who were confirmed vaccinated. In a way it’s reassuring because it’s an astonishing validation of the efficacy of vaccines. (In my state, 52 vaccinated people have died). On the other hand, it’s heartbreaking, because all of those families lost someone because others did not do the right thing. And because, as schools open, we’ll be exceeding 1,000 deaths of the unvaccinated per day—at least 120,000 by year’s end—and it’s just such a waste.

Coronavirus cases that send vaccinated people to the hospital or cause death have been relatively rare, a New York Times analysis of state data shows.
