Impressions of this Marquise, please

Snicklefritz - what other options are you considering? Do you have those photos or details? would they also fit in that TDF setting? (please use that style of setting ---- it is PERFECT for a marquise - so classic, elegant and "Jackie Kennedy"-ish!)

And yes - as for a different marquise stone for myself... the hunt never ends! I seem to be insatiable when it comes to my diamond need/wants!!!

narabit, you've left us in great suspense of your upcoming heirloom ;)) I'm very excited to see pics when the time comes!
I agree that my mq would be at least an I1, but just looking at it through a loup, I think "well that's a high SI2". It does have some crystals that are reflectors and make it look like there are more than there really are, which makes me think that's where the SI2 comes from. Other than that, I'm dumbfounded as to why it's an SI2. But I suppose that's where the pitfall could be. I suppose we'll see what the appraiser says.
Absolutely love your desription of the 80's mqs! You're soooo right.

odbg, thanks for reminding me to follow my eyes and my heart.

Enerchi, honestly, there are no other contenders at present. I've approached a PS vendor or two, but haven't had success finding anything that makes my heart (and budget) sing in the same way. And, I am 99.9% certain I will be using that style of setting. The look takes my breath away! Good luck on your mq journey - I promise amazing ones are out there!

UGH! Everything fell apart :angryfire: I shouldn't be surprised, but I was hopeful that this diamond would work out somehow. ;(

The jeweler had told me not far into the process that they don't have a cash back return policy, just store credit. Not a good sign, but I was optimistic that they might just do a couple days to allow me to have my appraiser take a look at it. No go, of course. While this is standard policy for the jeweler, I know that the fact that the jeweler pulled the stone in from one of his diamond "guys", who I'm assuming was a wholesaler, had something to do with it as well. He said that to sell the stone to me he would have to commit to it (ie buy it from the "guy") first. Makes sense, I guess, but still sucky :knockout:

On a sidenote, who are these "guys" exactly??? I know it doesn't work this way, but I'd sure like to get to know them :rodent: This is probably the subject for another thread.

Furthermore, my appraiser understandably doesn't do assesments out of her office which holds all of her tools. So she couldn't evalute the stone in the store before we would buy it. Two strikes at this point.

But I wanted to fight for the stone and tried very hard to find a way to make it work. We even considered a 6 months interest free financing plan because it would allow us to get the diamond up front, and pay minimum payments toward it in the first couple months while we had it evaluated and I decided if it was THE stone. Then we would pay it off in full well before 6mos was up. We thought this might be a way around making a huge investment on a risky stone purchase because the jeweler told us that if we returned the stone within the financing period, we would get what (little) we'd paid toward the stone in store credit and the rest of the financing contract would be voided. So worst case scenario if the stone didn't work out we'd put our store credit towards a wedding band or something.

But then I started reading the Wells Fargo contract. I've never done a financing plan before, and while I know many people handle it successfully, it just scared the heck out of me! What if returning the diamond wasn't as easy as the jeweler made it sound? The contract stated you had to send such requests in writing to Wells Fargo. Seemed complicated and was very worrisome. Then we found out that since my SO lives in SF, CA and the jeweler and I are in STL, MO he couldn't get the financing plan anyway.

So we walked away. Think I'm going to take a break from the diamond hunting for just a little bit to regroup. Thanks again everyone for your input!

Oh I'm sorry to hear that Snicklefritz. That has to be disappointing for you both.

Don't loose hope tho - try a diamond search via the PS vendors....The right diamond at the right price is out there for you. Still in love with the marquis shape and the setting you chose?

It was disappointing Enerchi, but I suppose I was pushing my luck by hoping they might work with me on a short return policy. Yes, I do still plan to go ahead with a marquise and the tapered baguette setting combo. And I would like to see what the PS vendors can find for me. Seems safer at this point. I was surprised that several of the local jeweler in my area didn't have any real return policy to speak of.

I am dying to know who this jeweler is, and who you've so far looked at.

Someone on here got a fantastic marquise online and I cannot think of who the vendor was. I don't know why I keep wanting to say Martin Fuller because that's an appraiser...

Is it possible that GOG or WF could call in that same EGL marquise you fell for, and do their thorough work-up? It might increase the price a little if you went ahead with the purchase, or if you decided against the purchase you'd likely have to pay the shipping/insurance charges they incurred to bring in the stone... but both vendors are equipped to evaluate the stone and I believe provide a return policy even with virtual inventory stones. Just a thought.

Ugh, that sucks, Snicklefritz! I was rooting for you and this diamond. But you know what? If it wasn't meant to be - it wasn't meant to be. You will find the perfect diamond, and when it happens it will all work like it was fate. *hugs*

Ame, after calling virtually every jewelery store in the STL area, I found this diamond at The Diamond Shop. Other places I looked were Vincent's, Adler's, Genovese, and Scotsman. Timekeepers, E Heffern, Hufford's, Simon's, Curt Parker - and there was another whose name I can't remember - either didn't have anything to show me or didn't call me back at all. Love your new avatar, BTW!

marymm, I can't say that thought didn't cross my mind. But I imagine it would be a long shot, and at this point my heart just isn't in the search anymore. I have had GOG looking around for what they can find. I'm hopeful that something will come along in the next couple months or so. Thanks for the suggestions though!

I think you're right, distracts. This one wasn't meant to be for one reason or another. Thanks for the hugs :))
