Importance of the 4C's in necklaces

I have heard people drop in color and clarity often when creating necklaces and earrings as one cannot tell the difference for example between an H and a D once mounted.

Is that really the case?

I am guessing cut still matter considerably.

I want to purchase a wreath necklace. Total carat weight is close to 30+ and the price for this using top stones is astronomical. To do something similar at a better price point we want to go down in color and clarity and do it custom instead of big luxury brand.

Depending on how big the stones are you are using I would go to H, SI2
