Jewelry is very personal. Often times it is chosen with meaning and sentiment that may never translate to what someone else might desire or find truly beautiful. That is part of the allure of jewelry. It is a unique and meanigful expression.

There are no ''breed standards'' to measure against and a critique forum would be useless, if not harmful.

I''m glad that we can provide an outlet for things other than jewelry though!

100% ditto! I know there are plenty of people who dislike my ring/set, but that''s not what it''s about for me. I know I would never post my ring(s) asking for ''critiques'' of it/them, because I just don''t see a constructive purpose to it.

Unless it were purely a quality-control thing. You could post extremely detailed pictures of the setting to get feedback on possible integrity issues, etc. (as opposed to the style) - but people can ask for that in Rocky Talk.

I agree. I think it would definitely cause trouble as everyone has such different taste ad it''s such a sentimental piece of jewellery that no one wants to hear bad things said about theirs.

*vendor* pic of my new fish. I don''t know how ''enhanced'' the lighting is but he sure glows like crazy IRL.

I do believe there''s an inclusion just under his left fin...but he doesn''t move that one very much when he''s swimming so you hardly see it without a loupe.

He may be smaller than some but he makes up for it in liveliness in the pond.

My pond is pudgy and short so he looks bigger when swimming in it (relatively speaking) than some of the girls'' in my office''s pond/fish combo.

I''ve already asked sweet DH for an upgrade: I''d prefer one with more orange in him.

Do you think I could put him in the u/s????

DF - are people actually honest on the koi forum?
well, they have a ''main forum'', where even if you posted a low quality fish there they''ll still say...pretty fish, very nice,blah,blah,blah...but if members posted a low quality fish on the ''judge my koi forum'' the knowledgeable members should give their honest opinion, that way newbies can learn from the more experienced hobbyist, but then you have members saying...why are you guys being so ''rude'' ?

look at it this way...if a newbie posted a poorly cut stone on PS are we all supposed to say ''very pretty'' ?

No, if they''ve already purchased or received the stone you either don''t comment or say congratulations you must be thrilled. If they''re shopping for a stone and the bad one is one of the ones they specify, you gently direct them towards a different stone.

Jewelry/stones and the aesthetics of both are very subjective. Take the instance of florescence. Some people love it, some people hate it. It''s up to the individual who owns the stone to love it/hate it.
but then here''s the other side of the coin...if PSers kept on saying...very nice ,he/she then might go out and purchase another poorly cut stone. IMO...we should tell the truth so that they don''t make the same mistake on their next purchase.

Please provide ASET & IS for the fish; also is the glow due to florecense? Does it glow under black light? Are all the scales in perfect alignment for exceptional buoyancy?

I remember a thread on here a while back that was about "ugly rings". I think they ended up taking it down because it offended some people. Hopefully nobody posted rings that belonged to any of the PS'ers! (I remember posting a picture of a horrible ring that looked like an alien baby.....) It was a great thread - a lot of fun - I think people are too sensitive over this stuff. As long as the pictures didn't come FROM PS, who cares?

Slippery slope.

Very STEEP slippery slope.

9 times out of 10, the people posting pics of bad stones are newbies who are just looking for temporary praise and adoration. They''re not looking for a lesson in purchasing a diamond at that stage. There are many other opportunities to critique their prior to getting engaged.

So then you''re thinking of technical critiques? I think you''re thinking of Rocky Talk. That''s precisely where people put such requests.

What if it you were fishing for one? Do koi make for good eating? The quality of the fillet of koi was delicate and sweet.

They're like giant goldfish aren't they? Do you like the taste of goldfish...?
mmmm, yummy! I love goldfish. They taste fabulous cooked on the bbq (and cheaper per pound than shrimp).

Darn, I can''t quote two posts at once easily. Anywhoo. In response to Harriet''s post I''m reiterating Musey''s comment about Rocky Talky.

There is no need to have a specific and separate critique/criticism thread outside of the Rocky Talky room. If people want their stuff critiqued, they should go there and ask for it.

Hudson, what I do is click reply, click "quote", select and copy text, go back, hit reply for the other post and click "quote" again, then paste the other text in.

Actually, that''s probably what you meant by "not easily"

HI:

A picture is worth a thousand words: multiple threads about "your favorite rings" where your ring is not shown. Is this not a form of critique?

Multiple threads threads where the shapes of stone are compared, whereby many state certain shapes are undesirable. Critique, albeit subtle?

Pave rings, halo''s outdated? Not heard the last of that.....

This is an open forum. Threads of this "nature" occur whether it is an "legitimate/ongoing" or not. And as for opinions; like it or not, on some level if you want to parcipitate, have to accept it.

cheers--Sharon

Even if there was, I don''t think I could bring myself to tell someone that their engagement ring wasn''t nice. Plus, I know there are things about my ring that others wouldn''t choose (it''s white gold not platinum, it''s set up a little high, etc.) but I still like it for me. I think a lot of people could end up with very cookie cutter rings that way.

I should clarify what I meant (sorry, I had a 6am flight this morning). Rocky Talk is a great place for people to learn. Once they''ve bought their stone and it''s posted in SMTR, there''s nothing that can be said without being hurtful. Likewise, in CS, I''ve come close to severing my tongue many a time.
