I''m worried about ring/finger sizing ...?

Several months before beginning to look for a ring for my girlfriend, I had been asking about her ring size/finger size just messing around. She had mentioned it''s either 6 or 7. At first, I didn''t know any better as I had not looked at rings and such. Now that I''ve been researching and studying ring sizes v finger sizes, I have a couple questions.

1) Is there a difference betwee ring size and finger size?

2) My girlfriend is petite; we''re talking 5''1/5''2 at most and he hands are relatively small. She is not overweight by any means - in other words, her fingers are not thick. Could it be possible to be a ring/finger size of 7? I thought this was for thicker fingers?

3) How do they measure the size? In mm? I bought a .75 diamond, so I''m worried I gave the custom jeweler the wrong size (I gave him 7, since she told me that and seemd fairly confident - although she said she could be a 6, but 7 I thought was what she appeared more confident on).

Thoughts? Feedback?

Thank you

Unfortunately someone who is 5'1 could be ANYTHING. Height/stature I am sure correlates with ring size to some degree, but not always...

What does the shank of the ring look like? I think as long as it's not an eternity ring it's better to get it bigger and to size it down. If it's an eternity, you really will want to get her measured somehow...

And finger size usually means ring size...not sure if it has another meaning for another reason, but a 6 or 7 isn't out of the ordinary at all. The average size is somewhere between a 6/7 in the US.

1. finger sizes are most used in the context of rings, so I assume it is the same.

2. The visual difference between a 1 or two whole sizes is not that much. For example, my L ring finger is a 4/4.25, and my L middle finger is a 4.5-4.75, and my L index finger is 5.25. There's some, but little visual difference, so judging just by observation is not a good method unless you do this for a living.

3. chances are you'll need to resize if she told you "6 or 7," which is a huge range.

You can resize that, I wouldn't worry too much. If she said 7, she's probably a 7!

a perfect fit is flattering. but, resizing is not out of the ordinary. in most cases, she''ll be so overwhelmed with the new, shiny toy that she''ll forget it was the wrong size to begin with. plus, going to the jeweler to resize is also a fun trip to some. they get "professional" to tell them how beautiful the ring is and what great taste her fiance has, etc. ...i''m sure you get the picture.

I''m 5''2". I told my then BF, now FI, that I''m a 6 too... till we went to size it. I was sized a 4.25 - 4.5. It was then I realized that I''ve been wearing rings on my right hand middle finger and I have been wearing thick chunky rings and therefore needed to be bigger.

For my left 4th finger and a thinner E-ring or W-ring, it''s definitely smaller. My knuckles a little big but my friend who is my height and skinnier has bigger knuckles and she is a size 5. Knuckles affect the size too.

I''ve been told to get it a tad smaller so that they can heat the metal to expand it or file in down. If you get it too big, they have to cut it to size down the ring and if not done properly, it may leave mark. Your ring seems to have enough metal to size up better. However, do not take my words for it

and please check with your jeweler for recommendation.

Hope it helps!

I''m 5ft 4inches, fit right in within "normal" weight for my height and have fingers 6.75-7.25. They don''t look chubby. If she said that her ring size is a 7 go with that. Or ask her to get it checked just in case. Any jeweller would be happy to check her finger size.

Does she have any rings that you could "steal"? You can bring one to a jeweler and they''ll tell you what size it is. Of course it would need to be a ring that she wears on her left ring finger.

I am around 5''1/5''2 and a size 3. I think this just shows the huge range of finger sizes.

I actually bought a ring sizer and measured each and every finger .. LOL. My friends love to come over and use the sizer - they always bring their girls over to find out their size.

Might be true if it's a "tad" but not if it's a whole size. A good jeweler can resize without a leaving a mark period.

And I disagree, bigger is better because if it's too small you can't slip it on her finger during the proposal!!!

Here are my thoughts....

The enagement ring I originally had had pave set diamonds halfway around the band .. all was good until we had to size it down. My diamond was set in a stock size 6. At the time we got it I thought I needed a 4 3/4. The ring was sized down, and immediately, the pave set diamonds started dropping out. The drastic down sizing "stretched" the setting and the diamonds were no longer secure. Sadly, this happened with two different pave set diamond rings.

By the way... the new reset engagement ring..is a size 4.

Just something to think about...

Speaking very generally, usually moving a ring up or down two sizes is OK, though with some that have lots of pave it isn''t as easy (see Kbogg''s post- stones can pop out).

Your setting has a thickish shank. Those styles fit tighter, thus typically need to be a bit larger. A whole lot of us like a slightly loose fit too, because fingers swell in hot weather and that tight-ring feeling is icky. And some folks have larger knuckles than their actual finger size.

6-7 is perfectly average in size... a lot of stock ring sizes are 6.5, so it isn''t big at all. Height (and even weight) doesn''t make as much difference in ring size as you''d think... it can vary a LOT. Girls with very delicate/small bone structure seem to have small ring sizes but that''s about the only generalization I''ve come up with after sizing a LOT of women for rings at work... height and even weight don''t have as much to do with it as you''d think.

My girlfriend is 5''3, 105-110, petite...and she wears a 4.5

A size 7 would fit on her big toe to be honest.

I''d quickly go buy her a "fun" ring...like a sterling one, for example, and see if it fits! If she said she "thinks" 6 or 7, it is pretty clear to me that she really doesn''t know her size!

My fiancee is about 5''2 and 118lbs and she wears a 3.75mm diameter ring. I''m surprised nobody answered the original poster''s question. It''s measured in mm. I''m actually surprised alot of the sales people in jewelry stores DO NOT know what the unit of measurement is that they''re measuring!!! The last jeweler that I will be buying my diamond from on Saturday finally gave me the right answer. He used a tool that can measure digitally on the ringettes that they all have and he proved it to me without me asking him to (I guess he wasn''t too sure either!)

That's not right...3.75mm is smaller than the diameter of a .25 carat diamond...do you mean centimeter maybe?

ETA: Centimeters wouldn't be right either...too big.

Sorry, I don't know what I was smokin'!! My god...you're right! LOL! Wasn't even thinking... I better take a third look at that diamond that I was going to buy this Sat!

7 seems a little big for a petite girl. Is she fairly small-boned? I''m 5''0", 95-ish pounds and my engagement ring is a 2.5. My FI tried "stealing" my rings to get the correct size, but since I''m right-handed, my left ring finger is about half a size smaller than my right ring finger. Have you taken that into consideration? I had never before worn a ring on my left ring finger, so it would''ve been impossible to tell the size from any rings I have. I also like my e-ring to be fairly tight so I don''t feel apprehensive about it coming off--have you considered that as well? Has she told you she likes to wear her rings tighter or looser?

I have a ring of hers that I "stole" for comparison purposes. The finished ring will be done early next week and I'm going to see it next Friday ...

I plan to take the ring of hers to the jeweler and have it sized to see if it's right.

I know for a fact she wears this ring on her ring finger and it's the right fit because I have seen her put it on ... I just don't want to go through the hassle of getting it resized and such; I would rather just go and pick it up, hopefully the size is the same as the ring I have.

That sounds like a good idea. She wears that ring on her left ring finger right? And it isn''t considerably thicker or thinner than your ring? Those things can impact the size too, but the jeweler should be able to help you figure that out at least a bit.

Finger sizes are just so hard...just because someone is petite doesn''t mean they have tiny hands and vice versa.

Maybe no one said with what unit ring size is measured, and maybe lots of sales people don't know it is in mm, because you can measure it in any unit of length you want, not just mm.

3.75mm diameter?! Are you sure that''s not the width of the band?

1) Is there a difference betwee ring size and finger size?
one is the size of the finger and one is the size of the ring. i''m a 5.5 finger size and my ering, which is a 1.6mm width, is a 5.5 ring size. however, i do have a 13mm mixed cut eternity ring that i wear on the same finger and is a 6.0 ring size. the fit the same to me. but, in that case, i think it''s because of the thickness of the latter ring. also, you can take into consideration that some people like to wear rings slightly lose as you may swell in hotter weather, on the plane, give themselves some give for gaining baby weight, etc.

2) My girlfriend is petite; we''re talking 5''1/5''2 at most and he hands are relatively small. She is not overweight by any means - in other words, her fingers are not thick. Could it be possible to be a ring/finger size of 7? I thought this was for thicker fingers?
some people, i''ve read, need bigger sizes to fit over their knuckles. could this be a factor for her?

3) How do they measure the size? In mm? I bought a .75 diamond, so I''m worried I gave the custom jeweler the wrong size (I gave him 7, since she told me that and seemd fairly confident - although she said she could be a 6, but 7 I thought was what she appeared more confident on).
measurement can be metric (i.e, meters) or standard (i.e., yards). however, mm or inches will all converted into ring size for a ring. think of it like shoes... you can measure your foot in inches, but if you want a pair of sneakers, they''re going to take the measurement that you gave them in inches and convert it to a shoe size. and, to the same extent, european ring sizing is as different as european shoe sizing.
don''t feel bad if she said 7 and you ordered a 7. she can''t blame you if it''s loose. that''s what she said and you went with it. if she''s really a 6 and it''s not an eternity band setting, downsizing is a snap.
