is it smashed potatoes or mashed potatoes?

Somebody help!

mashed potatoes

If you''re 10 years old or older:

Mashed if they were made with a masher, ricer, fork, or some other kitchen implement.

Smashed if they were thrown on the ground and/or stomped on.

Mashed....Unless you''ve been drinking, then they are smashed...

mashed.

never heard of calling them smashed......

Most of the time it''s mashed but very rarely I have seen "smashed" potatoes on a restaurant''s menu and usually it means that the skins are still on the potatoes and they aren''t super silky but a bit chunkier of a mash.

ditto this.
I make both mashed and smashed at home, and the difference is exactly what
neat described.

And yes, usually "smashed" is a more trendy term used in restaurants etc..

ummm..how come Elegant?!

The only time I''ve heard the term smashed potatoes is on Noggin..a dance Zee and Moose do..I need to get out more.

yup! it''s both. Mashed are more creamy, smashed are more like the lumpy ones with skin still left on!

Both delish!

Maybe but am thinking they charge you more for smashed... I think the smashed ones have some of the skins left on them before they are mashed?? Does that make sense???

It doesn''t sound good but I put a little cauliflower in my mashed potato, oh and a ton of roasted garlic, butter milk and fresh ground pepper.

Mashed.

Unless you''re high falutin''. Then you pronounce them ''smashed'' while speaking with a snooty accent.

Oh, you were talking about a food dish?

Not the dance?

Mashed. Never heard them called smashed (unless it counts coming from a 5 year old

I don''t care what you call ''em. Please, just pass them over my way.

My family makes me my own batch of mashed potatoes every Thanksgiving. Until I became old enough to realize that it disgusts other people, I used to just plop a gigantic mountain of them on my plate and eat away in delight.

Now I take a little bit of everything and gorge on a giant plate of mashies after everyone''s gone home.

I make both...mashed and smashed.

I make my smashed with bacon, sour cream, chives, and cheese with the skin still on. Mashed is skinless and smooth. Yum both ways!
