BF and I went to the jewelry store over the weekend to shop for our engagement ring. The store show me 3 cushion cut diamond and I fell in love with one of the cushion cut diamond. I keep going back to that stone...and while looking at that stone, all the spec. questions went out the window. They show me the GIA certificate, but I couldn''t remember any of the spec. on it and to be honest, I didn''t really care while I was there looking at that stone. I was just hooked with that one and the spec. doesn''t seem to be important to me at that time. Now I''m going back this Sat. to make a final decision, I need to go in with a clear head. What should I look for in a Cushion cut? Spec. wise...

You've found what you're looking for! Cushions are such pesky little fellows! You need to use your eyes...The one thing I would look into is the depth of the stone and the spread...only if that matters..I would like to get a good spread for the carat weight...but if you love the looks and it's a good price...then you've found it!

I agree you really need to use your eyes with these stones. Numbers alone will not help. They are only a guide line. Buy the stone not a piece of paper. Good luck, it does sound like you may have found the one!!! That is so exciting and please post pics if you get it. Good luck!!!

Hi Bobo!

I'm sure no diamond expert...but here're my two cents.

The most important thing is that you've seen it and you love it. This is NO SMALL THING!

Good that it has a GIA report. Could you call the store and have them read you the GIA specs over the phone? Then maybe you could post them here to get comments before you go back next week. I'm not into diamonds and numbers, but plenty of people here are!

When you go back, arrange to look at the stone in different lighting, including outside.

Hope this little bit helps...

GIA report says little about cut anyway. The specs are mostly useful to compare prices between shops. If it really is twice as much as elsewhere, well... it is your call.

I can't think what could be on the cert to detter me from getting the most delightful gem I can think of - and really, not much could pull that trick. Even if there are some issues, insurance makes a good compromise against anything, especially if the same shop sets it.

The only danger is that the shop accross the street has a much nicer one. But then... this is always the case. No one can see all the diamonds in person to choose from.

Can't wait to see the beauty and the cert!

If you see it in diffrent lighting situations and it still calls to you go for it. Number are spiffy but I think they are the most help for RB. Cushions seem to be more of a feeling stone. If you love it and it is in your price range go for it.

What does "depth and spread" mean? And how can you tell if the stone has good depth and spread? I''m fairly new at all the terminology. Thanks!

This is dumb to say, but I feel embarrassing asking for a copy of the certificate....I''m afraid the jeweler will just feel that I don''t trust him. I''m going to try to copy down the info. on the certificate this sat. and post it. But at the same time I''m afraid if the spec. are not "ideal" it will break my heart

, is this stupid or what...

Here is my other dilemma, the stone is out of my budget. We can afford the stone, but since we have 2 weddings to go to in Oct. (one is in the state, the other one is out of the country) I can''t really control the cash flow in my bank account. And I want to pay cash for the ring, not by credit card. I told my jeweler to hold the stone for me till this sat. for me to see it again. I also ask him to find some smaller cushion for me. The current stone I love is 1 ct.

Bobo, you have to go with your gut! While it''s great to be armed with numbers, if the stone really spoke to you then it''s probably the one!! I had the same experience with my cushion. I had seen so many of them but when I saw the one I eventually ended up with, I knew it was the one without paying attention to the specs. Looking back now, it''s NOT a perfect stone and I have second guessed myself many times as I''ve compared the NUMBERS to other more "ideal" stones (mine is probably not as deep as it should be but that makes it look huge which was really important to me and it''s very sparkly). But regardless of what the numbers say, I love it and that''s what ultimately matters! If you love it and it''s in your range, go for it! But make sure to post some photos!!!
