Very exciting stuff!

However... I need your help PS! Can anyone help me find a setting that looks like this:

Screen%20shot%202012-03-14%20at%2022.56.25.png

But has the same pave shank and engraving/milgrain details as this:

B17D51CEC65E5A83E04010ACA0200EA0.jpg

His budget for the whole ring is not huge: under 2.5k- the bottom ring with a 1/2 carat diamond fits the budget but the picture she showed him as inspiration has shoulders that taper outwards not inwards... I'm 100% sure she will love the bottom ring but he is a bit nervous about not going with something exactly like the picture so I thought I would ask you guys! I think his budget could be increased a little if we found the perfect setting... and we could also get a smaller diamond of course...

Oh and he wants yellow gold :)

Re: I'm helping my friend's boyfriend buy her engagement rin

Thank you Yennyfire!

The first one you suggested is looks pretty close thank you! The price is right too. I will definitely show him that -I think he may want the tapering out to be a little wider though, so that it is almost as wide as the centre stone where they meet. The second option you gave me is very pretty but he doesn't want the shank to pinch in at all at the top.

Sorry yes, I wasn't clear, he wants a milgrain/pave/engraved shank that gets wider as it gets towards the centre stone.

Re: I'm helping my friend's boyfriend buy her engagement rin

I really question whether she would have seen an antique style ring the shape he is saying unless it is a totally and completely different style than these. Because the only setting I can think of that is wider at the stone and tapers down is the Leon/VC setting with French cuts. Tell him that is going to make a half carat stone look smaller. He really doesn't want the band as wide as the stone unless he wants to make the stone look smaller.

No, you're absolutely right, she hasn't seen an antique ring in that style... The picture she has shown him is of a cluster ring that tapers outwards. I managed to persuade him that a full diamond centre would be better but he is understandably worried about veering too far away from the picture she has shown him. I have told him that it will make the diamond look smaller but he really wants me to look around at other options first. She isn't very jewellery-conscious and I'm pretty sure that what she liked about the ring was the way the pave sparkled. She also said she maybe wanted an antique ring so that's why I showed him a pave setting with engraving and milgrain. She is certainly not expecting a huge diamond, and I am in the UK where the size of the diamond is far less important than it is in the US (of course I realise I am hugely generalising...), however, I do want to get her a nice ring that shows the diamond off properly!

I am also a bit nervous about getting her something different to what she has asked for, even though I am convinced she would love it... After all, I am not her fiance and I don't feel I have a right to make such an important decision!! She isn't my best friend, in fact, she is a colleague of mine... But she knows how much I love jewellery etc and made sure to tell her boyfriend to come to me when the time was right ;))

It's a pretty style, but I agree that it'll make the stone look smaller.

I like this one. It doesn't pinch in at the top or isn't very wide either

This one flares near the top

Thank you Rhea! The bottom one is very very close to the picture she showed him thank you!!! I completely agree that with a 1/2 carat diamond it will make the centre stone look smaller but I will at least show him it as an option :))

I also recommend checking out this site. There are far to many similar to the style you posted to individually link but here is the site

Good quality and anything can be made in YG. They might actually have an antique setting that fits the bill-you'd have to call and ask. Leigh is pretty quick at finding out though :)

Have fun and how exciting for your friend!

Ah, she's in the UK! That changes my opinion. I know we get large rings over here. I just never see them!

Would he consider a vintage piece? I love this place! It's a day trip away from where I live, but I've never made it there myself. These all slightly get wider at the stone.

http://www.friarhouse.com/?itemID=1239 - oh, this one might the closest - it's a very wide flare near the center stone.

I'm going to stop. Neither of them may be into vintage pieces. I found the shop years ago and showed them to a friend who bought from them in person about 3 years ago and had a very good experience.

very nice- but I think the budget is 2.5K for the entire ring.

Ahh didn't see that. They still have nice fully completed rings including the center stone that is probably in budget. They have a large selection of rings/styles/sizes in that price range under completed rings.

Haha yes I know what you mean about not seeing large rings very often around here!! That last option is PERFECT thank you!! I love discovering new jewellery websites too :appl:

Thank you vintagelover I didn't know that site -a lot of them are over budget but it's good to have it bookmarked for other purchases... ;))

I sometimes check out US websites, but I love finding a good priced UK website! I reserved a ring through them years ago and found them very helpful on the phone. At the time they encouraged me to go visit them in store because a lot of their items weren't listed on their website. I ended up buying elsewhere, but still fancy a trip to Battle someday! They have quite a few in their sold items that are flared near the stone. You may have great luck there if she's after an antique look.

I eagerly await updates to this thread! I hope your friend finds something, whether it's new or vintage, from the UK or elsewhere.
