I'm going to Helzberg...

But not to buy a diamond Unfortunately I can't find anywhere near me who has loose GIA or AGS stones lower than a J to look at to see how I like the color. Many of you know I am considering a K or possibly even lower to get a bigger size for a tiffany replica solitaire (set in yellow gold) from BGD's virtual inventory, but I want to try to get an idea of what one looks like without actually having to get one shipped out to me.

So, if I go into Helzberg and ask to see their H-I-J's, is it fair to assume they'd be somewhat equivalent to a GIA or AGS K-L-M? Any help or suggestions on this would be appreciated!!!

Speaking as someone with a GIA M, I would be nervous about picking out the color based on a stone whose certificate you don't feel you can trust. I wouldn't just assume that a GIA K will look the same as the Helzberg I or whatever. Especially as cut quality plays into the perceived color as well.

I know you said you don't want to have one shipped to you but if there really are no GIA/AGS K-L-M's in reasonable driving distance from you, I'd consider doing it just for the peace of mind.

Yep, and I would think their top quality stones will have GIA or AGS reports. They will just be crazy overpriced! It would be a waste of time to look at anything other than GIA or AGS.

And I will have to add, jewelry store lighting isn't what you'll see the diamond in 99% of the time, so I really don't think you'll be able to accomplish your purpose in discerning color differences anyway. You really need natural light outdoors to see color difference.

Jessica, I'm not sure if you are still thinking of a halo but if you are you must look at kitskats gorgeous ring. It is a K round in a halo. Forgive me if you have already seen this.

Thanks for everyone's replies!! At the maul stores I saw a few GIA certified stones, but they were all in the colorless or near colorless range, nothing lower than a J again. Now I did also see "GIS certified" certified H and I's. I know there isn't a direct correlation such as 2 color grades off, but the colors didn't bother me at all. I just want to know if I will be okay with the K! Can anyone comment on GIS? I think I also saw some IGI's. Thanks again- I would love to just get a K shipped to me, but in case that isn't something the boyfriend wants to do, I am just trying to get it figured out. Again, I have had no problems with the color in GIA J's, but just want to know how low I can go for size. By the way, the things the employees told me at these places were so unbelievable... I am so glad I have PS!
