Jeweler would like $10,400 for the stone and vatche x-prong type setting

Hello Brian! While the stone you have selected may be very attractive, it is likely to be a steep/deep combo with some leakage under the table. Do you have angles? They are much more accurate than % and can give us a more precise idea of the make of this stone.

Just curious... Is there any difference between the AGS and GIA cert?

Crown angle = 35.2
pavillion angle = 41.1

Hey Brian, Giangi has some good points.

I agree that although it may be lovely, did you get to see any stones with a smaller depth and larger table>

Like this stone here:
1.38ct, F, VS2 Depth=60.9%, table 59%, for $8,903.00

Note this stone has a larger table than a ideal cut stone, but will face up larger. Hopefully it won't have any optics problems with that table...

These are some excellent cuts from Whiteflash ACA's which can help you see what some better cuts can do:
1.042 ACA E, VS2, Depth=60.6, Table= 56 for $8,190.00

1.22 ACA F, VS1, Depth= 60.9, Table=55 for $9,998.00

Thanks for the opinions guys. Am I wrong or isn't an ideal depth anywhere from 59.9%-63%? I thought that all of the specs fit into the "ideal" category. Am I mistaken?

Your stone has an unusually small table though - an dthis is what throuws those numbers overboard.

I would not venture to say that it is a complete looser - HCA or no HCA. If the value is atractive to you (without clarity grade no way to tell what the ballpark would be), it may be worth descending this one from the cyberspace right under and Iscope for closer scrituny! After all, the HCA is only a selection tool, and this one does not get a mark bad enough to get thrown out of the front running pack, I suppose.

It would be quite hard to get the angles favored by the HCA for such a small table, but the stone could be quite nice in person.

Thanks for pointing out that I left out the clarity grade. The clarity is VS2. I saw the stone in person and it was very attractive under normal light (not those tricky lights that many jewelers use to make everything sparkle). Also if I buy the stone in PA and have it shipped to NJ I don't have to pay sales tax which will save me approx $600. I did a search on PS to compare prices and while I expected a B&M to be a little more expensive he is very much in the ball park. I don't want to make a bad decision but I feel like you could wait forever for the perfect stone to fall in your lap.

Now I see it... you say "vatche X-prong type". Some of those are really cheap, a few hundred, really if even. If this is the case, the jeweler does not seem to have made such a discount compared to the 'ideal' cuts around here. (for ref. better 'versions' are priced a tad under 1k and the 'real thing' a bit more). It does not sound right to base a 10k decission on a $200 setting being given away 'for free'.

Hope this is not the case.

While there is some leap of faith required to get a so-so stone online, a top cut, color and clarity like this is a sure bet and bargain, it sounds.

You can always wait for the FedEx instead of driwing across the border

The setting is platinum and the jeweler told me that he would give it to me at cost.
