Hi all,

I had posted a few days ago about a stone I put a deposit on. I have to decide by later today if I''m going to purchase it. Here''s all the details. I put it into the HCA cut adviser website that was recommended and it came back with a score of 2.5, which it said was a very good buy if the price is right. I''d appreciate any last minute advice! Thanks again, you all have been wonderful. My budget is $5000 total for the ring (under that is always good!) and I''m looking for a balance of size and sparkly.

.9 G SI1 round
Price: $3599 plus tax
excellent cut
Table - 58.1%
Crown angle - 34.2
Pavilion depth - 43.6%
Girdle - medium
Depth % - 62%
no culet
diameter - 6.13-6.21
symmetry and polish - very good
no fluorescence

Hi purp,

Who graded this stone? Also, it would be nice to see the diameter, if you have it.

Hi Ellen,

It is graded by GIA and comes with certificate. The diameter is 6.13-6.21mm (shortest-longest).

The reason I asked who graded it is because GIA rounds their C&P angles, which these aren''t with the crown, and depth is given instead for the pavillion. Just wondered if it was a lower lab.

From everything you have, it might be worth bringing home and having an appraiser look at it. If you are just looking for a nice make, and not a super ideal, you might have found one.

Thanks Ellen. Essentially what I''m looking for is the best quality stone of around 1 carat (don''t want to go any smaller than .9) that I can get for around $4000. It does seem like this is a fair price for this stone, although I realize there may be better cut, but more expensive stones out there. I did a quick search on blue nile and found several G SI .9 stones with nearly identical table and depth % to this stone for $4300ish.

I''m heading over to the store around 2pm or so. Any other thoughts from others on the forum would be greatly appreciated!!

Does your jeweler carry any AGS0 stones, do you know?

And you're very welcome.

I''m not sure. However he is very reputable in this area as far as I know. Specializes in diamonds and buys direct. He emphasized the importance of cut and showed me the stone under a fancy-looking microscope so I could see the inclusions (it''s eye-clean though). He also had another machine that created a shadow of the stone on a drawing of ideal cut proportions so you could see that this stone was well-cut. He was not pushy at all and I was surprised that he didn''t suggest a larger/better stone that was over budget.

He did not have a huge selection in this size range, he explained that because everyone wants 1 ct, the .9''s that are well-cut are hard to come by. It seems like he chooses which ones to purchase and offer his customers very carefully.
