Yay! My husband''s sister gave birth Saturday morning to a handsome baby boy! He was 7lbs, 5 oz; 20 inches, and in perfect health. They named him Cole! We are super excited. Now for the help...We wanted to buy some savings bonds, and now you can buy a $100 bond for $50...but then I got to thinking. If we want to put in $100 (we''re currently buying a house...and broke) what sort of ''investment'' could we give the child?
Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of besides a bond is a life insurance policy. For children, you can get a whole-life policy for a few dollars a year. You could start a policy and pay the first few premiums and then transfer it to the parents or continue to pay on it until he''s 18 or 21 as part of his birthday present or something. Then, a whole-life policy can be borrowed against as an adult.

CONGRATULATIONS, AUNTIE!!

He''s so sweet!!

Congrats to mom and dad, too!!

Oh my mom explained it to me and now I have forgotten! I think they get twice the amount. I don't know for sure. Hopefully an expert will chime in. I would love if someone gave me a bond. So practical. Cole is handsome indeed. Congrats on becoming an aunt!

I'd buy him some stock. Pick out a really good, solid company, and buy whatever you can, which most likely would be about 2-4 shares. Make sure it's one that has a reinvestment program, so the earnings in turn buy more stock. That will add up over the next 18+ years, especially if he or his parents, or both add a bit here and there. Plus, it teaches him about the market/saving, etc.

btw, he's absolutely adorable.
