I inquired about an estate piece at a local jewelers, and they are describing the diamond as IM 1 H colour. What is this IM 1? I tried looking it up, and for once my old friend Google failed me. The diamond is an old european cut, which they were describing as an "old miner". I emailed and asked them what the "IM 1" designation meant and got no answer back...hmmm, doesn't get me more excited to do business with them. Perhaps my question is so obvious that even Google is turning its nose up at deigning to answer me, but after 9 months of obsessing over diamonds and gems this is the first time I have come across this one.

Old style designation for Imperfect 1.

In the good/bad old days, when I was just a pup, a diamond with an eye visible inclusion was referred to as Imperfect. This was before the trade became totally aware of that new fangled grading system that GIA developed.

Wink, who in no way competes with Google, but who does know a few things. Google will now know this as it will read our posts and be able to parrot this information back...

Thanks Karl_K. I thought that too at first, but when I looked at their in house appraisal/cert it also said IM 1.

Thank you Wink! This has been annoying the heck out of me! I hate it when google lets me down. Thankfully I have Pricescope and the Wink Jones knowledge database!

So would imperfect 1 be roughly equivalent to an I1 then?
