I went to look at a stone today, but being a novice, not really sure about what I looked at. Don''t get me wrong, it was very, very nice. But I haven''t seen anyone mention an IGL certification, mainly GIA, AGS, and EGL. The person I went to see is someone that my best friend uses for all his purchases, and his dad also used him. Here are the specs from the IGL certification:

1.270 carat
Princess Cut
Width: 5.84 mm
Length: 5.89 mm
Ratio: 1.01
Crown Angle: 41.5º
Crown Height: 12.4%
Pavillion Angle: 40.4º
Pavillion Depth: 59.5%
Table Size: 71.2%
Girdle Thickness: 3.5%
Total Depth: 75.4% (4.40mm)
Symmetry: Very good
Polish: Very good
Color: I
Fluorescence: None

He said the stone would appraise for over 10k, and my price is half that. Help!!!!

Here is a tutorial on how the grading labs rank - http://diamonds.pricescope.com/grading.asp

Also you really need to see a Princess to evaluate it properly, this one looks fine on paper, but what I would suggest is if you love the diamond, ask if you can check it out away from the jewellery store lights to make sure you like it in real life conditions, and make the sale final on the diamond checking out with an independant appraiser, some have said that IGL can be a bit softer on grading. You can use the search tool to read more. IGI are seen more often here than IGL, it appears they are a lesser known lab to the best of my knowledge than GIA/ AGS/ EGL etc.
Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

Well, this wasn''t your typical jeweler, or store. Basically it is a little shop, no selection, as he mainly deals with custom orders. I did view the stone, and it while I didn''t go outside, the lights weren''t anything fancy. I''m somewhat concerned by the certification, so I guess I should ask about getting another certification?

You could consider getting the diamond regraded by GIA for example, but then if it comes back higher, the jeweller might want to sell it for more, also I didn''t see what the clarity grade was? It might be easier if you like the diamond and don''t plan to resell it, to get an independant appraisal to see how it checks out initially.

oops....it is VS2. I''m planning on buying it for an engagement ring, putting it in a Tacori setting, item #2573PR7.

Let me re-phrase that....I am buying a stone for an engagement ring. I think I will ask for a different certification.
