I recently took a GIA l.5 carat marquis diamond to Jared Jewelers to mount in one of their settings. They chipped my diamond and said they would replace it with a diamond of same or better quality. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and was very upset because it was an anniversary gift from my husband. They were supposed to get the diamond in and let me approve it. I told them repeatedly to make sure it was a GIA certified diamond. When they got the diamond in I went to the store to look at the diamond. They had it mounted in the setting and it was a IGI certified diamond exactly the same color and clarity as my original diamond. I have been told that IGI certified diamonds were less expensive than GIA certified diamonds. I am very upset because I specifically told them I wanted it GIA. Are they trying to give me an inferior diamond and what should do?

Well, there just are not enough swear words for what I would say to them. Sorry, just being honest. GIA replaced with IGI is not acceptable period. The paper alone is not worth the same in the diamond world. Meaning, pound for pound the exact same stats would result in a lesser priced IGI. That''s just the reality. Tell them to feel free to try again with GIA or speak with your attorney.

Don't let them do this to you.

IGI is inferior period. You asked for a GIA graded stone, so that's what you should get. I'd take this up with the manager, letting him know you know a thing or two, and will not be taken advantage of.

I am sorry!! Please keep us posted!! Good luck!!

If they wanted to give you a comparable diamond but found one that was only IGI certed, all they had to do was send the diamond to the GIA for grading. I think they''re trying to pull one over on you. Definitely complain, and good luck!

IGI for GIA ?

no way Jose !!

After getting all this wonderful feedback I contacted the regional manager and the store manager and told them they had two weeks to replace my diamond with the GIA cert that I had or I would contact my attorney.

If a company chipped my marquise shape diamond i would expect they would give me everything i asked for...i would expect the stone to be GIA certed...but keep in mind that just because its GIA dosnt mean exceptional quality...GIA is a grading lab and will grade any stone sent in for certification...they will grade a low quality stone as well as high quality...they will record the color, clarity and proportions exactly...its up to you to learn if the quality is equal or better then your diamond that was chipped...the cut and proportions of a marquise is very important to its look and beauty...so make sure that the stone is not poorly cut and that the color and clarity is the same or better then your stone. The one benifit of a GIA certed stone is that most companies have their better quality stones by Gia because its a more expensive lab to use.IGI certs are not the best guarentee that the color and clarity is exact.

I CONTACTED THEM TWO WEEKS AGO AND SAID THEY HAD TWO WEEKS OR I WOULD CONTACT MY ATTORNEY. ON FRIDAY i CALLED TO SEE IF THEY HAD GOTTEN MY GIA CERT DIAMOND IN AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS ON ITS WAY. i CALLED THEM TODAY AND WAS TOLD TO CALL LARRY IN CUSTOMER SERVICE AND HE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD FOUND THE STONE BUT IT WOULD TAKE TWO MORE WEEKS FOR THEM TO GET IT IN. I CAN''T BELIEVE IT. i TOLD THEM TO FORGET IT AND I WOULD CONTACT MY ATTORNEY. I CAN''T BELIEVE THIS IS THE WAY THEY TREAT CUSTOMERS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT WAS ALL THEIR FAULT. THEY ACT LIKE THEY COULD CARE LESS.

Of course...Jared is part of Sterling...good luck and be persistent!
