if you must spend $50k on one item...

A vacation or a new car (both DH and I need one so it's a toss up as to who gets it).

If it HAD to be spent on fun things, I'd buy a new car for DH. He rarely wants anything and a brand new car has been on his list for a while. I would love to spend it on jewelry, but the next big purchase will be for DH!

I'm so boring. My first thought was "ooo, pay down the mortgage!"

Me too! I also thought of paying off my student loans.

If practical things like that doesn't count though, I'd buy a new cars for my husband and me. We'll need them in a few years.

50K would go against my home mortgage. It wouldn't buy a car, a piece of jewelry, or any other toy or bauble . . . well, I might pay off my current car and then pay down my mortgage.

The practical answer would be to use the $50K to pay off my student loan. But I'd prefer to (and probably would) use it on an around the world vacation for me and DH.

A big ole garage for my house!

Round the world cruise, I'm dreaming about it already....sigh.....

HI:

Summer on the French Riviera!

cheers--Sharon

My kid. College fund that is. Wouldn't have to worry about this down the road, which would be a relief. And if she doesn't go, the money would be ours for fun later!!

Pay off the house and anything left towards other debt-hospital etc.

If something fun, I'd expand/redo the back garage and redo our house.

A tiara of course!

I have pretty much all I need, so it would have to be something fun. That would be a diamond, then. Nice big emerald cut, I think.

Thanks. When should I expect the cheque to arrive, DF?

would you like the cheque in GBP or USD?... :Up_to_something:

$50k could pay off my remaining student loans AND be the down payment on a house. There's a super cute house listed for $69k I just showed my DH this evening, and part of the $50k would make a very nice down payment on that.

New bulkhead!

if it could just be for fun: A RTW trip/vacation

if it had to be bling: an amazing custom bracelet (I'd buy the stones and pay upfront for the design to spend the money in the 24 hour period:-)

If it could be practical: STUDENT LOANS!

I' d put it on the mortgage. Then once the mortgage is paid off there will be more money to invest in RSP's

Do I have to buy something new? I would rather pay off my car and then put the rest in savings, how boring eh?

Hmmm, considering it takes many of us months to decide on a stone or setting, it might be challenging to buy one jewelry item within 24 hours!

I read the question as having to buy an item rather than paying down a mortgage or putting it in savings, and I would use some for that if it fit the rules! I really hate it that you want ONE item, DF! Because I would split it between a car ($35,000) and jewelry ($15,000) if I could. I'd really hate to spend $50k on something that would depreciate, yet I really don't care about having a ring worth $50k, either. But I'd have to go with a car with that kind of money...probably a Porsche 911 that is a couple of years old for my hubby. He is looking for one now, but with a lower budget. Then I could use the money he had allotted for his car to buy a new car for me!

I'd finally get the pool and patio put in. I could have a really nice pool for that.

Restriction is to SPEND (as opposed to investing or paying down debts) and IN 24 HOURS (meaning mindlessly).

I have everything I need and want (including all the vacations possible before my husband retires). The only thing I can think of to spend (or rather waste) within the next 24 hours is a big diamond. Since $50K is not enough, so I'll use it as a downpayment until I save up the remaining funds.

Buy stock...the gift that keeps on giving!

New car.

As much as I'd love to say jewelry, my car is 13 years old. It's still in good condition, but it would be nice to have a new one! In real life, where $50,000 extra money doesn't magically appear, I'll probably be getting a lightly-used Prius. In magic-money land, I don't know what I'd buy.

If for some reason I couldn't get a new car and couldn't invest it, a diamond riviera necklace. Preferably with pears (pointy side facing out/down), though rounds in three-prong settings are okay too. Set in platinum, because I want to FEEL that I have it on. And I'd wear that sucker everyday.

If I couldn't find a riviera necklace, I liked, then there are a TON of rings I'm interested in and I'm sure I could find one for the right price.

I would spend it on my mortgage. That would pay it off, if I'm not mistaken, and leave just a tiny bit of fun money. Maybe enough for a small vacation, or a bit towards student loans.
