If you have a fur--how often do you wear it?

If you have a fur do you wear it every day or save it for "good"?

I have one and when I first got it I saved it..only when I was dressed up. Well, I brought it out this winter because I was cold and find myself wearing it just about whenever I go out...grocery shopping, errands, etc.

I ran into my MIL while shopping this am and she had a snarky comment about wearing a fur with jeans. I honestly don''t see anything wrong with it.

Please, don''t let this thread turn into a should you or shouldn''t wear fur. This is not what this thread is about.

I don''t own a fur, and would never buy/wear one.

But, I thought it was hilarious when I saw a woman here in FL wearing a full-length fur recently. I mean, it was cold, but I don''t think it''s ever cold enough here to wear that

My feeling is that if you loved it enough to buy it, wear it! I''m always freezing, so I''m sure if I had one I''d wear it a TON, with jeans, with nice dresses, with whatever (well, maybe not with sweats...).
 
I too am hoping that in posting this I dont get comments about whether or not I should wear fur.....

But to answer your question, I wear fur almost every day. My leather jackets that have fox fur collars I wear usually to work with my suits and such. I have a more casual jacket that I pair with my mink scarf. I have rabbit scarves/cloves that I wear all the time, and any mink lined wraps I will wear with anything. However, my full mink coat I wouldnt wear with jeans. I usually only wear it when I dress up. But thats just me. I know plenty of people who wear their mink, beaver, etc jackets every day. I guess it just depends on the person (and how cold it is.

Is your MIL uppity? If I was in a snotty mood I might say something about it with jeans, but other than that, I think you can wear it whenever you want. I am curious though about why you would wear it grocery shopping and stuff only because I would think that it is heavy. I have a very heavy leather coat that I hardly wear because I do not like carrying the extra weight.
 
I also don''t wear fur, but think it''s making a comeback. I notice alot of celebs are sporting it which was unheard of a few years back.

I also say wear it as you please!

I am chronically cold in the winter--no matter how warm the house. I usually wear silk long johns under my pants and always a sweater.

My moccasins have rabbit trim - so every day at home.

When I was about 12 I loved to browse second-hand furs at thrift shops.
 
I don''t wear mine to commute to work every day, but I''m likely to pull it out any other time. It doesn''t matter what I''m wearing or were I''m going.
 
I would never wear fur under any circumstances, but if you enjoy the look of it, it shouldn''t matter what other people say. If that''s your style you should enjoy it.

Ignore MIL''s snarky comments. We never go anywhere, so if I had a fur coat, it would sit in the closet, and that''s a waste of a beautiful garment. I quite saving things "for special" cuz anymore, "for special" is..getting to go the grocery store by myself and leaving the kids w/JD. Women wear heels w/nice jeans, and they still wear their big diamonds w/jeans, so I don''t see why it should be any different w/a fur.

JD''s saving deer hides so we can make a coat for me with coyote or fox trim. It won''t be a full length coat and it won''t be all fur on the outside but I will wear that sucker all winter long!
 
I have been wanting a fur jacket, but everything I try on looks way too big on me, like I have a tiny head and a huge body.

My mom left me her mink stole (I have never worn it) and am wondering what I could do with it. I was thinking of getting it made into a teddy bear.
 
I''m not into fur (and respect your request to not turn this into a debate).

My thought on the fur + jeans: Jeans are acceptable in nearly any situation and because fur coats are so dressy, wearing a nice pair of jeans is a nice complimentary clothing item. It''d look odd if you''re wearing fur and fancy slacks to the grocery store.

Also, just to add, I think that if you''re going to go full-out with the fur, it''s best to keep jewelry to a minimum. Tone down all else.

I agree with the others that you should wear whatever you want, when you want. I''m all for having nice things and using them every chance you get. No point in having nice things that just sit and collect dust. And I think a fur with nice jeans and maybe some cute boots would be a great look.
 
I think a short fur can be worn with jeans whenever. For me a full length I associate with going to the theater or on shabbat or going to a nice dinner. I say rock it!
 
For those thinking mink jackets are heavy, they are not. They weigh about the same as a light suede jacket. The "fur" weighs almost nothing and the pelt/skin is like suede. The linings are silk.

Funny - I''ve also told my cat I''m going to make him into a fur item - a blanket or an outfit. He just sits there purring while I discuss this with him.

I actually have a gorgeous black sealskin coat that was left to me by my great-grandmother. It''s probably from the 20''s or 30''s. I''ve never worn it out, partly because I have no idea what to wear with it, and I don''t want to be judged for wearing it. I don''t think I would ever buy a new fur coat, but I guess that I think it''s okay that I have a "vintage" fur.
 
I have a problem (a learned behavior passed down to me by my Grandmother) that I save all of my favorite things for "good" and I''m trying to break myself of that habit and wear even my best things any time I want to. Having said that, I haven''t been too successful with wearing my fur any time I want to even though I make that proclamation every winter. I think you can wear fur with anything or nothing at all

What does sealskin feel like? I have a black "mystery critter" vintage jacket from the same time period that I''ve always vaguely wondered what it was made of. I hadn''t thought of sealskin- mine feels sort of like rabbit but it''s shorter, softer and denser.

I don''t tend to wear it a lot; it''s fragile.
 
I inherited a 3/4 length mink -- it is a gorgeous thing from the late 40s ... and I have yet to wear it because I have no place to go in it. I''m also terrified of damaging it -- it''s the most gorgeous article of clothing I''ve ever owned

I think that''s why I don''t wear mine more, because people are so judgemental. I bought my coat twenty years ago in cash with my annual Christmas bonus and it felt damned good to be able to do that after my first husband left me with a ton of debt and a lot of emotional recovering to do. Back then, every woman I knew not only owned a fur (I lived and worked in New York City in the garment district), I knew women that owned three or four. It was no big deal in those days. I wouldn''t buy a new one either, but someone would have to rip this one from my cold dead hands to take it from me.

I would definitely wear it as a reminder of your great-grandmother.

Blah, board ate my first post. Retry!

Sealskin is stiff but sleek. Rubbed the wrong way, it''s bristly and stiff. Rubbed the right way, it''s smooth but not soft. The hairs are coarse and can feel slightly oily. If the fur you have feels softer than rabbit, it is definitely not sealskin. Can you post a photo?

It''s really short, it almost has a velour look to it from a distance. There is some variation in the "fur" or "skin" or whatever it should be classified as, it looks kind of like a pattern up close with some spots looking sort of shiny and other parts looking more rough.
 
Re: the original question -- I grew up partly in Alaska, so furs were very common there (and didn''t have the same luxury connotations they do in the "Lower 48") and I loved them as a kid. Since then, however, I haven''t owned or worn any until this past Christmas, when I received a very long and very impractical silver foxfur stole as a gift. It''s lovely, but I have no idea how to wear it and think I just look silly in it.

Any ideas on how to pull off a really long stole with an otherwise non-fur ensemble?
 
I don''t wear fur and I won''t knock someone for doing it thats all on them. I do wear leather though.

Thanks for your perspective ladies!!! I have every intention on wearing it should the weather continue to be as cold as it has been, The wind has been brutal--up to 40mph at times

LGK-maybe sheared beaver or mink? The longer guard hairs are removed and then what''s left is the undercoat which is really dense and sooooft.
