haven -

i've thought and thought and thought about this. and this is what i'd like to learn/achieve in a week....

i'd like a week and a programme to help me start getting back into physical fitness. but not something for those who are already fit, or a little fit. i'd like a week's retreat for those who have a loooong way to come back.

up until 2005 i was a very fit gym junkie type - i trained and trained hard. then i had an operation during which i was turned on the table wrongly while unconscious, and my back was badly injured. after a year in bed on my stomach, my fitness level was simply eroded. i would LOVE a week's program of something like supervised yoga, a tailor made weights program, and 'coming from nowhere' aerobics to motivate me to get back into it all. i suspect there are STACKS of people who are either post-injury or who have never had any level of physical training or fitness, who need the most basic of the basic programs. something NOT like boot camp - something in a lovely environment which was part of a VACATION where healthy food, but good food was served. i know there's plenty of health retreats, but they always seem too hard core to me, and to require too much physical fitness to start with. i'm talking about 1/2 hour sessions here, not 2 hour slogs. i'd love to do a week of 'yoga for those who can barely move' (or something like that!). i guess i'd enjoy a program along the lines of 'exercise as relaxation' - reacquainting oneself with one's body - that type of thing.

so. that'd be my big thing.

just a thought.

failing that, i'd like to restore a piece of furniture or do some pottery.

I know most of these have been said before but here''s my list:

Learn a language
Yoga Classes
Cooking classes
Cake decorating and baking class
Learn to sew
Learn to knit
Take a PS-type class (eg what to look for in a stone and comparing stones with differences in the 4 Cs)

I would also love to learn beauty (make-up) and hair styling techniques.

I think that''s it for now

Whitby--I love your idea. My mother is very interested in doing female empowerment type of seminars (she calls them "wife goes on" weekends . . . ) and I''m really intrigued by these outside of the box ideas.

The more I read through everyone''s wonderful ideas in this thread, the more shocked I become that the Haven does not yet exist. I can''t wait to open it.

Metal working is such a great idea! I took a couple of classes in high school and they were so great.

I would also maybe think about attending a class to quit smoking...especially if this is a place you can stay for a week, like a mini rehab session.

This article appeared in my local paper today. There''s definitely a market for this! Older, but still happy campers...
I had no idea you were a Main-ah! Or did I? Can''t remember...
What part of Maine are you from? Most of my family lives in Biddeford.

End threadjack!

Another language.

Oh a big DITTO for me Lorelei. I regret not doing this in my younger days. I really wanted to learn German and French.

I would love to go to a health retreat and learn a whole new way of life. By that I mean, how to live well if others do your cooking and organise your day, while you dont have to do anything!!!! (I could get used to that).
