...what would you choose and why?

I would probably pick a pear cut for the finger coverage. Plus I think they are unique but classic.

How about you, what shape would you pick?

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

I'd go pear as well. I love the chunkier pears and the "bang for your buck" coverage. I also love how it gives the illusion of a longer and slimmer finger. I've had a RB, marquis and PR so I'd try another shape!

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

I am currently getting an amazing OEC that I am head overheals for and is going to be my forever ring....so I hope this doesn't sound like I am cheating on it. :cheeky:

Anyways, if money weren't a factor, so I would probably say a nice, big, yummy asscher in a 5 stone LM, like the one Erica from jbeg used to have. :lickout: In reality, I would never ever have the funds to get the clarity and size I would want(ginormous 8.5 fingers here).

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Probably an Emerald cut. I find them understated and elegant at the same time. However, I prefer them in the >3ct range, so size would be a big criteria. If it's an engagement ring around 1ct or less, I'd go for an Oval.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Depends on the budget.

For me it would be a choice a Rectangular Emerald Cut or an Oval or an OEC.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Some sort of multi-tabled Octavia discoball hybrid...

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Def. would pick an asscher, oval, or OEC. Wow. :lickout: :lickout: :lickout:

Pear. It was my first love. I like the unique shape. I'm not sure though because I've never had one on for more than a minute or two. I think settings would be more difficult and I wouldn't want to chip it's point.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Well, very few men wear engagement rings and I'm not going to be one of them, but if I could own any shape diamond, no question in my mind it would be a large emerald cut, a classic rectangular shape like Harry Winston is known for, with a culet.

I'm not sure why that's the 'ultimate' to me, but it is.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

I'd love to try a cushion. I've wanted one for years.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

One of each please

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

If I could find an OEC-like pear... pear, hands-down! With a super-delicate micropave halo. Or a fat OEC marquise. But if those weren't possible, a round OEC, in a hexagonal or octagonal bezel. There's one at the jeweler's down the street that I keep drooling over... if only I could convince DF that I need a diamond ring...

I appreciate that because your ring is gorgeous!

Antique Pear, no doubt in my mind. I'd take a modern pear brilliant, too, for that matter.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

A nice big OEC or RB, since rounds are my fave (yeah, I know I'm boring). I'd love a big giant pear or Octavia too.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

I'm really drawn to square shapes so it would be a big honking princess or asscher. I think that might be why I couldn't be happy with any of my other RB rings.

Hm. If money were truly no object? I'd want to recreate this vintage Tiffany ring, only in strong color-change alexandrites.

Yeah, that'll be the day ... ::)

Queen of Hearts!

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

a big fat pink diamond that covers my whole finger-real-estate. i always see them done in radiants. meh. make me it in a chunky cushion, or emerald cut. or pear. and not any larger cus it would be annoying to wear.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

I would want a large round stone, I love the sparkle...

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Hm, I really had to think about this one.

I was going to say old cut round (since these days I'm just loving them), but in a smaller size, I think I'd still choose a cushion. Then I thought...what about in a honker size? And I have to say, cushion still wins!

I surprised myself. ::)

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

I like rb up to about 1.5 carat. Bigger than that I like fancies, specifically marquise (which looks great on my finger) or pear. Square shapes appeal to me visually but do nothing for my hands. However if I were a princess or something and was being given a truly expensive large wedding ring (like over 10 carats) I would want an emerald cut, if I were going with a diamond. Sparkly diamonds look too ostentatious to me in the very large sizes, emeralds are more understated and look better when you go are going for humongous.

Of course, even an emerald cut can get TOO big. Have you guys seen the ring of the late Soraya of Iran? Ewww!

(you have to scroll down a bit to see the photo).

However, I don't want to change the engagement ring I have, as I REALLY found out recently. I lost it for about three weeks and believed it was really and truly lost--to the point that I even contacted my insurance company and was about to start a claim. and I was just miserable. I was so miserable I couldn't even wear my other jewelry. I have always feared losing it (my mother lost hers adn it was traumatic) so I have various 'in case' diamond rings but when it came to the actual situation, I found I didn't want to wear any of them, I only wanted MY ring that my hubby put on my finger 30 years ago. So I guess I can't answer the question fairly since I found that the one I have truly is irreplaceable to me.

I found it about two weeks ago. I was so happy I burst into tears and since then can't stop looking at it all day. My hubby was very happy too. I am so glad to have a happy end.
I was way too upset to post about it on Pscope.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

For eng. ring, I'd prefer a RB, but for other jewelry, I'm open to most shapes. I'm not a fan of many shapes on my hands, but those particular shapes often look FABULOUS when set as pendants or earrings. I LOVE fancy shapes for earrings. I love that kite shaped dbty bracelet that has a link to over on RT...

ETA - I had the shape wrong, but the look is sooooo yummy!!!

A 2 1/2 carat emerald cut set in platinum. I'd be perfectly content and stop visting various sites and droolng over jewelry.

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Oooh! :appl:

A large Emerald! - Like Danny, HW style!!

A large Cushion!

Maybe even an Oval, but I would have to ensure it's the absolute best cut!

A LARGE Octavia!! Solitaire! Oh, I think I just died & went to heaven! Yup, that's it!

Re: If you could pick *any* shape diamond for an engagement

Asscher, of course! I'm even drawn to them in colored diamonds & gems. Though I have to say that light pink Belle Epoque cushion w/culet that sold the other day at auction was an amazing stone. Kind of OEC like, kind of cushiony, kind of oval -- what the heck was that, other than MAGICAL!

Okay so unlimited budget.

That's different then. I'd take a 3-4 carat asscher solitaire then.

But if I was on a budget, my original choices would stand.
