I think this is just another way of asking how important the "branded" cachet is for you; but its a topic that I find really interesting.

Some ground rules for discussion:

1) 'Branded' refers to a recognisable jewelry maison (e.g. Cartier, VCA) or 'branded super ideal' vendors like Whiteflash. High-end jewelry designers who do custom work do not count as a brand for the purposes of the discussion.

2) if you go for branded jewelry, this means that you cannot then get your Whiteflash ACA, for example, set in a custom setting. You will have to choose one of the designer settings that they themselves offer, with no custom tweaks allowed (I guess we can debate about what kinds of settings are allowed and what aren't).

3) You are only allowed to choose one of the two - branded or unbranded. So if you pick branded, that means you will have to buy everything through a brand, but you can choose to patronise different brands (e.g. you can buy your ring from Tiffany and your wedding band from Cartier. That is allowed). You can't buy anything that is custom. Everything has to be just how the brand offers it. Similarly, if you pick unbranded, you cannot buy anything that is branded. So, you can buy an AGS 000 stone, you can vet it as much as you like, you can hire a concierge to help you pick it out, but you can't get a branded Super Ideal. You can hire a specialty high-end custom jeweler to make you your settings though and you can do as much custom work as you like.

4) I want to try and limit the price factor, so for the purposes of the discussion, let's say that the "brand" aspect adds a maximum of 10-15% to the price of the equivalent item unbranded. So this means that while branded jewelry is going to be more expensive than unbranded it is not going to be many magnitudes higher like it is right now :D however that does mean that the brand will continue to use the materials they currently use, so if they use DEF VVS stones/melee exclusively then they will continue to do that and you can't request lower colours or clarity to help with the price. I'm specifying that because I don't want people to choose unbranded wholly because of the price factor.

5) To remove the emotional aspect from the discussion, lets say any jewelry you currently possess which is sentimental (e.g. your e-ring) will change to fit the kind of jewelry (as much as is feasible/possible) you pick. What that means is that if you pick branded, then your current e-ring will have never existed the way it is (if it is not also a branded ring) and the assumption is that your partner would have proposed with a branded ring that comes close to the specs of your current e-ring. If your current e-ring is something that brands don't do (e.g. lower colour antique stone) then it will be replaced by something that they do do (and the value will be roughly the same as yours).

6) You cannot replicate an iconic branded design through an unbranded jeweler.

So given all of this, I would pick unbranded, because I love working on custom jewelry, and I like being "different". I wear my few branded jewelry pieces with happiness, but I would totally give them up versus never being able to wear something custom again. I like knowing that my jewelry stands out in a crowd.

I picked branded. For me, it’s the easy button! I have no confidence in myself for designing a beautiful piece. There is so much of the design process that I just don’t understand. If I bypass that unknown and purchase branded, it takes away the anxiety for me.

Unbranded.
I like the freedom in choosing exactly what I want and not being constrained by any set rules

Easy one for me! Unbranded because I have too many CS and CS needs to be unbranded so I can make the settings that I enjoy!

Well… hello Oscar Heyman, Graff, Harry Winston. Does JAR and Cindy Chao count too?

Yeah you know what, why not? The caveat still remains though that the price would be the cost of the equivalent piece elsewhere plus 15% percent (meaning that you’d have to see what an equally talented artisan would charge to make that piece, source stones of the equivalent quality, and then add 15% for the brand value component), so they would still be fairly expensive pieces!

My wedding ring is unbranded, my engagement ring is a branded setting with a branded diamond, so I'm kinda screwed. None of my other jewelry matters to me like those do.

Ok I’ll be honest, branded or not doesn’t really matter to me. If anything, apart from the high jewellery collections which I can’t afford anyway, I’m not into buying those immediately identifiable designs that seems to be quite common in my part of the world. Plus some of the brands do have the most awful looking CS.

I originally picked unbranded until I remembered all those stunning CS creations by designers like Cindy Chao. So it’s not for the brand, more like I really love the designs. Designs that I know I cannot replicate elsewhere because they really are works of art. If the price diff is only 15%, then it’s totally worth it.

Branded pieces to me often seem to be lacking in character. I'll take unbranded any day, to be able to work with artisans more along the lines of my aesthetic (whatever the heck that is). Also, unbranded antique pieces are where it's at.

Well most of my bling is unbranded so the choice was an easy one for me.

Branded. The workmanship is on a different level. The designs are tried and tested. The stones and pearls are vetted by an expert. The premium is worth it for me even for nondescript pieces like a wedding band.

I would go unbranded if I could find the same quality of workmanship. But it has been very hard to find.

Custom isn’t for me. I find the entire process stressful and I’m a ball of nerves until I see the finished piece.

Happy to go without branded jewellery, as I have done so for nearly 50 years without a single piece of branded jewellery ever since I became interested in jewellery when I hit low double digit in age.

DK :))

Unbranded here lol. Unable to afford the prices the brands demand. And I tend to have more offbeat taste a good chunk of the time so it's easier to just get something unbranded made than trying to locate a fancy brand I couldn't afford anyway for it.

Same. I also don't really love most designer lines. I like a few things from the designer houses, but prefer the variety of unbranded.

Branded.

And then just wait for my favourite designers to qualify under that “branded” header.

For my tweak fix… Even the biggest houses do custom works and special orders.

::)

for me, totally unbranded. I like being able to put different parts of different pieces together. This assumes good quality in custom pieces, of course.

The point though, yssie, was that you can’t go custom or special order if you pick branded! That’s how I envisioned the question initially :D I excluded the custom designers like VC, LM, EW etc from the “branded” pool.

I've spent too long in sales for polls like this, apparently

Unbranded.
I actually dislike branded. Mass produced designs aren't for me and some of them are so unimpressive, it seems the only special thing about them is the brand name stamped on the box.
I've always loved unique, hand-crafted jewellery, ever since I was a kid. It makes me happy to work with a jeweler and create a design that's not only beautiful but also fits me as a personality. I want to recognise myself when I look at my pieces.

Well, I picked unbranded but ACAs throws me for a loop. I would want the branded diamonds for what the diamonds themselves offer. Branding in and of itself holds no appeal for me; it's the qualities of a product and how they suit that compel me to buy or not buy.

This has provided good food for thought. I don't wear a lot of jewelry. The most consistent and important is a diamond ring for my left hand, and usually (but not always) a band to pair with it. The setting is very important to me, however it's the diamond that matters most.

I *think* given the parameters you have outlined that despite voting 'unbranded' I would prefer to go with a branded diamond and be 'stuck' with a branded setting vs. choosing an unbranded diamond and having the option of any setting. Which means, OECs and OMCs are out.... I have an OEC solitaire and an ACA three-stone and I think if I had to be boxed into one category or the other, I'd pick the ACAs. I would also love the option of Octavias, or Quadex. And.... I have AGS000 studs but I wish I had gone with WF ACAs. If I got an eternity band I would want a Tiffany or one made with ACA melee.

Since my answer really only hinges on one or two pieces, I am not a great target audience. But there you have it, FWIW.

Although I do love a good branded piece, especially older Cartier collections, I would choose unbranded all the way. The options are limitless, I can choose the center stones to my projects which are most important to me.

Some branded pieces like particular Cartier and VCA bracelets have gotten so popular to a point where I feel like everyone (okay not literally everyone but you get my point) has them!!

Actually your answer was really interesting to me because it basically shows that cut is really just king for you. I threw this out as a discussion question in here mostly to get people debating and questioning because that’s my fav part of PS :D

It’s interesting to me because my personal view is different, the setting is more important to me than the stone because overall the piece as a whole is the most important thing to me. While for you it’s the opposite.

Thank you!
