Ideas for selling loose stone

I have the diamond that was from my prior engagement ring that I really want to sell but I’m having no luck. I thought maybe one of you kind people may have an idea about what to do.

The stats on it are: 1.15 ct princess cut, E/VS2, GIA certified. I can post other stats as needed.

I had it listed with the local diamond broker for 2 years. It’s listed here in preloved jewels. It’s on Diamond bistro, loupe troop, Craigslist, FB marketplace, OfferUp and I think that’s it.

The current price on it is $3800 but I’m willing to negotiate.

What am I doing wrong??

I'm sure its a lovely stone and it sounds like you are doing everything you should, however,
princess-cut stones just dont seem to be in favor at the moment. I cant remember the last
time someone came on PS looking for a princess cut stone. They are surely few and far
between. :(2 Maybe some of the vendors can comment on how princess cuts are selling
for them...maybe somebody can prove me wrong. Maybe @Rockdiamond can comment?

Wishing you better luck with your stone. I know its probably frustrating!

I agree with @tyty333 - the princess shape just isn't popular at the moment. Yours looks to be both cut pretty well and priced well. I don't think you're doing anything wrong other than having the misfortune of trying to sell when the shape isn't "in." However, due to the way trends work, I suspect within the next several years it will be? I see more people going for radiants lately, and I suspect princess cuts will be next.
 
There's a buyer for (almost!) everything at the right price - it depends on whether you'd want to lower your price for a quick sale or hold out to see what you might be able to get when they come back into favour a little more!

You could convert it to a pendant if you wanted to keep it? :))
 
Me, I’d set it into a simple 14kt gold setting. then it’s “ready to wear”. And I’d not mention it was from an “ex engagement”, some people think there’s bad juju from buying a diamond from a broken engagement.

I want to get rid of it so I have money to put toward my next engagement ring!

My other thought was to recut it into a different shape but I’m not sure how I feel about having the same stone.

The funniest thing is that it was in a simple Brian Gavin white gold setting and the broker had me take it out to get an updated GIA report! Maybe I can have it put back in that?
 
@rockpaperscissors67 I’m an old person that loves princess cuts..haha...Do you have a link to the GIA report?
 
Princesses used to be popular but have been an extremely rare choice for quite a while. They also sell at great discounts.

There are a few things you can try:
1. Consignment: they will advise you here who to consign with.
2. Definitely never mention a failed engagement. Just like you consider it as bad luck, others will too.
3: sell it as jewelry. Put it back in its setting.
4.: no matter what you do of the above, discount it.
5.: if you want to sell it yourself create a new listing.

I think the idea of selling and buying yourself something new to enjoy is great, it would symbolize a new beginning. You can also save the funds for later if you so prefer.
 
@rockpaperscissors67 Thank you for posting the GIA report. I hesitate because princess cuts need to be seen in person or have a good return policy because I can’t just go by the stats. I hope it sells quickly...

Perhaps the cutter can swap for another piece of diamond? - taking cost & expected loss into consideration, etc.

I am very curious about what a princess cut can become with not too much loss of weight or spread - perhaps a better liked square [ - a French cut? www Yours would be large for the species & great fun!], there are many models in circulation that may fit up to the proportions of your stone.

I just peeked at your LT listing, and it looks like a beautiful diamond, rockpaperscissors67. Like Mamabean, I love princess cuts. That one would make a lovely pendant, if you decide to sell it in a setting.
 
Have you spoken to Wink at High Performance Diamonds? If you are in the market for a super ideal round, his company can get quotes from diamond brokers to buy your diamond to put the funds to your future CBI... it may be less than you want since you are selling to a broker but it’s better than living with bad juju hanging from your neck as a pendant?
 
Either keep it or discount it more.

Once I had a cluster ring that was absolutely lovely but it wasn’t my flavor and I just left the LT listing up and about 9 months later it sold.

So you could sit on it and sell it when it sells.
