Ideas for itty bitty diamond???

Hi,

Okay, my mom gave me most of her jewelery and among the items is a small diamond that I'm not sure of the weight on. . .between .15-.20 or so (but I will get it weighed and measured sometime soon when it gets set). It's very sparkily and I'm excited to do something with it, I'm just not sure what.

Do you think this size is too small to use as a center diamond in a filigree type pendant that has lots of detailed white gold carvings? This is one idea I've thought up, but I need more ideas and the price has to say VERY low because i just had a platinum pendant made and we have other priorities like diapers! I'd like something antique/vintage in appearance.

Does anyone know of anything pretty for this size?

I think what you are describing sounds like it could be very beautiful! I'm a big fan of the antique/vintage look, and if I were in your situation would do something very similar. As for any other ideas, perhaps add some sapphires or rubies to it? I always found the sharp contrast of a red or blue next to white gold to be quite pretty. Hope this helps, have fun designing!
 
You could also do those popular three stone necklaces or earrings - but that would mean buying more diamonds.
Your idea sounds fantastic, though I love the thought of flanking the diamond with two sapphires in a simple setting for a neat right hand ring.
It's all about preference!

My first thought was a "Promise Ring" for one of my kids. But, obviously my kids are a lot older. I can't remember the last bag of diapers I bought!

Hi, Michelle Carmen. I have seen the pendant you have an idea about--a white gold antique-style look with a small diamond centered in an ornate circle of gold or other small diamonds (maybe a few 1 pointers)...I have tried to find it (I had thought I had seen it on ebay but couldn't find it)...Anyway, I am sure you could do something like that... I will keep looking. i just saw it the other day and it's driving me nuts

I had been browsing on ebay for a bezel set dimaond "floater" pendant like PQ's that I am still thinking of getting...I would get it from one of the online vendors or my guy here of course

Yea, buttercup settings are great for small stones (and big ones), esp. in white metal... They make one forget where the diamond ends, and one can surely see a lot of these in old jewelry.

There is one issue though: this is going to be a small pendant, if built around the diamond, so it will suffer from the usual "reversing syndrome". Not sure if that setting is wide enough or heavy enough to prevent this. Whatever the final model ends up being, it should match about 2/3 of the weight of the chain and have substantial base (area against skin) for its height to be stable... if this is a concern, of course.

Just my 0.2c. finding use for a diamond, even small, sounds like a nice New Year day occupation to me

Thanks everyone. I like the idea of surrounding the main little diamond with other diamonds, Jennifer. That sounds cute.

I also have a Tiffany floater diamond pendant, like the one Jennifer is looking for, so this is why I'm trying to find something antique looking. The main pendant I wear is modern looking and the diamond is bigger (not very big, but still it's more dressy), so this little diamond, I'd wear to my kid's playgroup/library story time. . .places where all the ladies don't wear large jewelry.

Okay, I'll hunt around too!

Ana - I'll be using a medium weight wheat chain that's 18". . . so I guess this means I'll need a pretty heavy pendant to prevent flipping, right? Maybe lots of gold, or add a sapphire or two like Clownfishfunk suggested to weigh it down more?

SAPHIRES !!!! Sure! When would I not jump on any colored stone suggestion? Oh, and therw was this set of four differently colored diamonds (pink, green, orange and blue, all $ 700) which would make a great set too.

I agree with the statement above. One way to make even the tiniest pendant sit right in any wether is a "wire" chain (my 1mm, 18K, flexible one which bends enough to look non-futuristic).

Crazu for color as I am , there is one style of pendant which really inspires me: below is one traditional version and a platinum interpretation of the style from a pair of earrings at Fay's. Do you have a particular style in mind?
 
Fay's as in Fay Cullens??? I can't see the picture, I don't think it posted, but I LOVE the jewelery from that site!

And they make those earrings on order, so, it may be feasible to have a pendant made with that "face" instead, depending on wether they want to do it and what relations with the actual maker they have.

The set of colored stones used for the first model is about $400 all top quality (untreated stuff) and about 4mm diameter.

Yes, it's PERFECT, Icelady. I think that's the one! Sapphires would look so cool surrounding my little diamond! Also, it's a good price since it's white gold rather than platinum. Okay, I'm going to contact Fay Cullen and see how much it would cost just for the setting.

The F. Cullen site IS dangerous, I must add. . .hahaha - way too many beautiful items there!

I do not have a "usual" venue. Some places would be: Africagems, Multicolour, AJSgems, ACstones and Mineralminers from the more or less recent past. Most things were presents: I like to get my pieces (usualy cabs) cut from whatever rough I pick. With others (e.g. Creativegem) I got in touch and close family / friends did the buying.

Glad you like the pendant! It seems like a great buy, and Faycullen makes them on order. The central stone is suposed to have 4.5mm diameter: does this match your stone? The pendant is listed HERE
 
Icelady's pendant from Fay Cullen is almost exactly like what i remember seeing on ebay--that's it!

PS I stumbled across Fay Cullen a couple of years ago and I love their stuff.
 
Also Michelle...you already know about doing this but what about knocking off another Tiffany piece? They really do have some amazing designs with diamonds that I love, but of course their premiums are insane. What about one of their other pendants? Something where the main diamond takes the center area and then you can do the other ACA melee around in a pattern .e.g like a starburst where the main diamond is the middle and the other arms of the sun are curving around....really pretty.

lol so, this is another option. . .plus I realize now that my stone isn't large enough as AnA asked, for the F. Cullen setting, (it's smaller than 4.5 mm, but I'm not sure how much smaller, so I'll need to look around a bit more for a setting for this little diamond).

It's hard because there are too many styles and designs I like! lol But, I think I'll save for that Fay Cullen one as a side project, because it's way too cute to pass up for only 400 or so dollars. (Still, it would look cool with sapphires. . .maybe they can put those in for me to give it a more funky look.)

AnA - thanks for the recommendations for colored gems sellers. I'm bookmarking all of these sites for future reference. . .there's a couple other little projects i have in mind and I think they'll be helpful.

Oh, and you've got my mind totally racing about sapphires now! lol I don't have any sapphire jewelery so I'm imagining all the possiblities.
