When looking for an eternity band with very small diamonds (total carat weight would be around .50) should I bother with an ideal scope, or am I being too picky for a simple RHR?

Thanks!

I find it's really hard to get my IS lined up to see light return on my eternity rings because of how tiny the diamonds are and then the 'curve' of the band throws it off. But you can try. I think I see pink and red in all my stuff though, even the crappy 10 stone, so who knows how well I'm actually using it for these tiny melee.

you could probably get a pretty good idea on cut quality by who the piece is coming from.

The $25 scope is not much good on 1 pointers, best with the $75.

We select every diamond with it BEFORE we set them.

But you can reject below standard smalls after setting - try to get as much light behind the stones as posssible.

I have seen plenty of top manufacturers stones in high color and clarity that fail dismally on cut quality.

Garry,
Is this because of higher magnification on the $75 model?

Thanks,
Lynn

I think Garry is correct that the expert model does deliver a crisper image that is somewhat more useful with tiny diamonds. On balance, the beginner unit really is excellent for screening most things. You''d be surprised and so would most jewelers how bad some small diamonds are when compared to nicely cut ones. You do not need to be a trained gemologist to discern a vast difference in the images found in the IS.....
