Okay, I realize this question could get 20 different answers, but if you were wearing a 1.6 ct. diamond ring, were fairly casual in dress most of the time, over 40, had small to medium ear lobes, and wanted to wear the studs most of the time, what would you think is the ideal size? I will say that 1 ct. per ear (2 ct. tw) is the absolute maximum, and I''d probably prefer smaller than that. I already have a pair that I''m unhappy with since coming here and learning about cut!!! So I need to get the next pair right! (I''m just thinking about another project to take a break from the ring setting dilemma!).

I had 1 ctw for a few years but upgraded to 2.2 total and I love them! I wear them with everything from blue jeans to black tie gowns and they go perfectly. Fortunately for my happy hubby my lobes are small and my holes are quite low so this was a big as I could go without them dipping below the bottom of my earlobe, but seriously they are just the right size. Sometimes I feel guilty for never wearing my other earrings any more (really I only have two other pairs of "good ones") because I wear these every single day!

0.7 carat per ear.

I''d probably feel comfortable with earring about 1/2 the size of my center stone. I don''t think there are any rules though and if hubby bought me 2 ctw i surely wouldn''t turn them down

Thanks Dee Jay! I want to wear mine all the time, too! I am pretty boring with my jewelry..I tend to wear the same thing every day!

Kenny, have you been reading my mind or my other posts?

Mrssalvo, as usual, that was exactly what I was thinking! Total weight of the earrings equal to the weight of the diamond. So I had been planning on .7-.75 each, but then we bought a larger diamond than I had originally planned. So that formula would mean .8 earrings in each ear.

The ones I was looking at are .70, and I want to be certain about the size as I''d prefer not to upgrade.

Well, if we're going to apply a *formula* I might have to ge bigger studs myself then! I saw a potential 5.14 ct upgrade stone for my e-ring today that might have whispered a few words to me as I was trying it on!

I am similar to you - 42 years old, pretty casual, and smallish earlobes. I upgraded my studs from .65 to 1.67tcw and love them. I wear them every day with everything from sweats to dressy.

Diamondseeker, I think if you can, go for the 1ct in each ear. You can pull it off and I think it''s perfect. My mom used to wear a carat in each ear and it looked so stunning and classy and yet not over the top. I have 0.82 ct pendant and each time I hold it up to my earlobe I swoon. It is the perfect size for me, since I am young, in my 20s, and I have small earlobes.

I agree with you that given what you describe, I think one carat each is wondeful, and you could go a bit smaller. I have larger lobes (I can hear my hubby smacking his head and groaning but it is true) and I never loved studs because coupled with my massive amount of hair, they did not show unless large. I have a large pair now, and I just reset them martini settings and I love them...

I would go one carat in each ear. It is a nice size and at our age it is a look that you can pull off

. Mine are 2.5 carat total, but that is what my jeweler happened to have in an ideal cut for a trade-in. However I have big lobes and I have been quite happy with the size. I wear them everyday with everything and I absolutely adore them!

Uh-oh Dee Jay, you''ll be in trouuuuuble if you try to apply the earring to e-ring formula! Lol!

Anastasia, yours sound like they''d be a great size for me, too! I''d love to see pictures if you have a way to take some!

Leila, Diamondfan, and Sundial, I''d have to stay just under a carat if I went to that size to not take such a hit on the price. But I think you''re right that it would be a nice size.

OH! One carat in each ear would be absolutely DREAMY! I have 1 ctw and adore them... so I am sure I would love twice the size, well, at least TWICE AS MUCH!

Lynn, if we apply our new formula to you, you''d need about 1.18 (I think?) in each ear!!

Note that I am differentiating our new formula from DancingFire''s formula which is too small! Haha!

I think, based on my wife''s reactions, that anything between 0.75-1.00ct. PER ear would be great!

That''s a professional opinion via a "real life" spouse''s reaction!...Oh, by the way, she''s petite, has small ear lobes and ...well, she loves "rocks"!

Thank you Gary! That means a lot coming from a wife who can pretty much choose what she wants! I envy the wives of the jewelers on here (in a nice way, of course!)!

I agree, I cannot imagine ever wearing anything more than 1 ct per ear but I have pretty small ear lobes. Also I know you live in a more understated town so anything more might be too much for your lifestyle. My FMIL had .80 tcw ready set go''s from white flash and I think they are a great size.

Okay, then that is .40 per ear. The best prospects I have at the moment are .70 each. I''m sure I''d like any size, but I am trying to make this be my last pair and would like to make a good decision! I really like my 1.5 tcw pair, but I don''t know if the 1.4 pair would look any smaller or not. It is so hard to judge diamond size without trying them on, and it is such a pain trying on jewelry when you know you''re not buying from a place! Not to mention most jewelers don''t have ideal cut stones in their earrings.

yes, 40 points each and I think they look substancial in her ear so I think the sizes you are looking at would be amazing! If you really want 1.5-1.4 total just wait until you find the perfect pair. I am so jealous. I have a baby pair 1/3 total (but they look good in my little ears) Oh, someday I can be like you

Not for long! Any news on the e-ring front?

I''m waiting on custom info, and if that does not work, then I am going to choose something simple, probably. My deadline is this Friday.

ds, I had to chuckle when I saw you were looking at studs. We could be twins. Both had a so so stone forEVER. Upgraded. Realized the so so studs we also had didn't work with the dazzling new diamond. In process of upgrading....

I didn't want to say anything til I got the call that told me these were everything I thought they were, they are.

I swear, someone is up there helping me out. These were way too easy to find. Now, while I do wish these were the size you are looking at, they will be more than enough for now. I could afford to get the bigger, but I honestly feel guilty since I just got my ring a few months ago, and hubby doesn't understand why I need some when I already have some.... So, I shall upgrade somewhere down the road, and I'm perfectly content with that.

Here's what I'm "sleeping on" tonight.

Ellen! Wow those look great!!! G VS2...I am jealous! I was looking at H VS2, but there were some G VS2 in the larger size I was considering. But like you, doing this at the same time as the ring upgrade does not make it very appealing to spend that much on earrings. Do you have them on hold? If you have them on hold and protected (!), can you say where they are from?

Yes, they''re on hold. ACA''s from WF.

Yay! I love getting the stones individually so they have the potential to be upgraded! Are there photos on the site for them? I'd love to see the links if so.

ETA: Found them...they are perfect!

See you found them

And yeah, upgradable to boot. woohooo!

Yeah, but you know what? It would really be nice to keep that pair AND just add another larger pair later.

I could do that.

Or, I could buy this pair of circular diamond jackets I found on Pearlmans......
