Let me start off by saying that I think the Ideal Scope, BrillianceScope, Isee2, etc. all have some value to consumers. However, I have a question about the Ideal Scope images that many vendors post on their sites.

The best type of ideal scope image is in figure 12 at this link on Garry''s website: http://www.ideal-scope.com/using_skills_test.asp

Most idealscopes don''t look like this and they have some small white triangles on the perimeter/girdle of the stone. The "super ideal cut" stones I have looked at in person all have pink rings in the middle (under the table), too. However, when I see these images on a vendor''s webpage, the image is always super dark with no pink and the "white" triangles look gray.

I got to wondering if perhaps some or most of these images have the contrast or other factors changed to "fine tune" the picture, and as I read the sites of various internet vendors, I realize I''m not the first to wonder this. I like to be provided with Ideal Scope images, but they should be taken "as is."

I don''t mean to make any accusations, and maybe I am completely wrong. I just want to raise what I think is a legitamate question: Are some (or many) vendors fine tuning their idealscope images?

RE: Adjusting images.

Obviously, this is a concern.

I suppose it is an image by image call, and who did them.

Unfortunately, digital cameras do not always produce what the eye sees. Additionally monitors vary as well.

Sometimes an adjustment of color or contrast is really necessary, if the image looks different than what your eye sees.

However, the level of this "manipulation" is a) if it has been done b) to what extent was the image "doctored up".

As one who regularly takes these pictures I appreciate your concern Smith. Recently one of the appraisers on this forum sent a diamond to mutliple vendors who provide these images. I also had the opportunity to view the other images and I was quite surprised to see how different the images were from each photographer on the very same stone. These images may be posted sometime for a comparison by this appraiser but at this point I can only speak to the images we provide.

Here is a side by side comparison of a picture taken of the stone that was sent to us from the appraiser alongside a scan that was also done from our Sarin and imported to DiamCalc which shows a "virtual" image based on the scan.

Dear Smith,
#12 is an ACA new line.
# 11 is a stone with more leakage, but about as many people would find this diamond appealling.

Dear Rhino,
Is the DiamCalc image an ideal-scope or virtual firescope?

Dear all,
It is a concern to me - it is why I have attempted to standardise photograpghy (normal daylight shots as well - with no backlighting) - we have invested a lot of time and money into this effort, with no desire to maake a profit - just to cover costs.

I have given up.

Dear Rhino,
Is the DiamCalc image an ideal-scope or virtual firescope?
If memory serves me right it was a simulated IdealScope shot but I changed the background to white so it all correllated. Garry, if I didn''t have the setup I have now I''d be using your system. When others in the trade ask, it is what I recommend.

I suspect from the darkness of the star difference that it was a Firescope virtuaal Rhino?

I hope the appraiser concerned will post his results - or at least share it with me
