Ideal Oval Dimensions?

Reading what other people have said, I know that fancy cuts in particular arent set to any particular dimension for the best fire and brilliance. Some say that it varies on a stone to stone basis.

My problem with this is that I am going to be buying the stone online, and I have a list of about 5 VERY similar stones as far as the 4 Cs go, and all of their measurements fall between the suggested amount. But the suggested range is very wide. Should I be looking for something that falls in the middle?

I''m going to be calling the company tomorrow and setting an appointment to look at the ones I have listed, and it will be a 3 hour drive up there..and I''m looking to buy the stone that day. So basically, I want them to order in stones with the best possible dimensions in order that I have some pretty stones to choose from.

Using the PS front page I was sent here http://www.gemappraisers.com/chartFrameset.htm (oval stone). Any experts on ovals tell me which dimensions they would choose on a stone if they were in my situation (only able to choose from a few which I have no idea will look like).

Those AGA dimensions are a guide to give you a "best shape", good show for the weight, and durability. In other words, not cutting faults. Check out the shape selection tool on the gemappraisers website, too and be sure you understand the pitfalls by playing with the oval shape outline, putting in the various lenths and widths and then fiddling with the "bulge" control slider. You will then discover the general range of YOUR preference for length to width ratio and see where your own judgment on "bulge" leads you to eliminate an ungly outline from an acceptable outline.

Then, go compare the actual stones and find a brilliant, sparkly stone that fits in the 1A to 2A configuration range. Pick one with a pleasing outline and not too little ot too much bulge.

I know this sounds complex, and it is, to an extent. It will be well worth your time and you will be able to find a super oval which will satisfy you. Because no standards exist other than AGA standards, you really won't pay more for a fine make oval. In time, I believe there will be many premiums paid for finely made fancy shapes, but right now, you can benefit as the market is a little lax on how to price fancy shaped diamonds of varying makes. It isn't really a mystery to the diamond trade, but dealers are so tradition bound that change is coming, but ever so slowly.

oldminer, I just want to say thanks SO MUCH for clearing me up on this and poining me in the direction of that fancy shape selector! I was just able to refine my list based on your info. I get all too confused about the numbers I am looking at, so it was a great help. For instance I found that my taste is around a 1.4:1 ratio oval, because anything less looks like a squashed round, too much more looks like a marquise (in my humble opinion).

And yes this is and will always be complex for me, but you're right, I want to find the best possible diamond! Lynn B, I will definitely post the results of my trip up there, and cant wait to show the finished product in the "Show me the Ring!" subforum.
