Ideal cut + G color = colorless look??

To get a good value and be able to get a larger diamond i decided to change my criteria in my diamond search from an F color (colorless) to G color (near colorless). I heard/read online that if the diamond has an ideal cut with G color it would still look like a colorless diamond. Is this correct?

The diamond I saw in person was an AGS1 excellent polish excellent symmetry G in color but it had a bit of faint yellow look to it. If this was a Ideal cut diamond (AGS0) would it have more of a colorless look?

your responses will help me determine if i should stick to just F color diamonds or if i can get away with a G with an ideal cut.

Often and in general yes, depending on size, shape, etc. (very big stones show a bit more color and certain shapes have more of a tendency to show color in the edges, etc)
What were the actual specs on the AGS 1? (in other words why did it get a one and not a 0?)
You may be color sensitive if the G looked yellow to you, in which case you may have to stick to your F.

The AGS0 will look whiter face up. If you noticed yellow in a G you are probably color sensitive so should probably go colorless. If however, you are mounting it in YG a G would probably be fine once it''s mounted.

Depends on you.

In theory, a well cut diamond that has been color graded accurately as G should still be near colorless, thus there should be little to no warmth visible, especially once mounted. This being said, I tried to do the same, however, the warmth I was able to see in G color stones always deterred me. My personal preference was for the D - F range, therefore, I went a teensy bit smaller.

While it may be a bit of a trade off, how much bigger would you be able to go if you dropped to G? If it is the difference b/n say, for example 1.25 F to 1.50 G then maybe the drop in color is worth it to you. If, however, it''s a difference of maybe 1.25 to 1.35, for example, the difference may not really be worth it given that the size difference will not be that noticeable.

Either way, a well cut F or G color diamond in any size should be gorgeous and should likely face up quite similarly ... whether or not it is something that will bother you is what needs to be considered further.
