Can anyone offer advice on what to look for in terms of table, girdle and depth while shopping for a cushion cut?

I am relatively new to this site but am also looking for a cushion and everyone here will tell you that there are no set numbers or rules for cushions. Look on www.goodoldgold.com for info on this cut and for diamonds and then Mark at www.engagementringsdirect.com is known around here as the "cushion king". If you tell him what your budget it and what you want (more square than round or vice versa, some flourescense, etc) he will find you some stones. And his prices are excellent and very competitive! He''s sending me pictures of a size stone that I never thought I could afford and I can''t wait!

Good luck!

There aren''t any rules with cushions like there are for other cuts. I ditto what was said above. Call Mark at ERD and call it a day, it will be MUCH easier than trying to learn all the intricacies of cushion cuts.

Take a look around at some of the cushions here. MrsS has a gorgeous Daniel K that has a very unique look to it. Many of us have the antique looking cushions which are Cushion Brilliants, check out BostonJeff''s! Pixley has a gorgeous one, and so does scarlet16. Off the top of my head I can''t recall who has a modifed cushion brilliant, but if you search for the cushion threads you will find them. Decide which look you prefer and let us know. I''d be happy to see what I can find. But if you want to make you life simple then do as neatfreak says and call Mark at ERD, he''ll pick the perfect one for ya!

Big ditto to all the other responses! No rules with cushions and numbers don't tell you much anyway. By sticking religiously to any given numbers could mean you miss out on the perfect diamond, so keep an open mind and use your vendor's expertise to guide you.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Sounds like Mark is the answer. I know he typically does he business via phone and internet, does anyone know if he can discuss in person? I live in NY, so it would be worth my while to see the stones he has.

Lucky you! Lots of folks have visited him at his office to pick out their stones in person. Be sure to call in advance to set up an appointment and let him know what you''re looking for so he can have a selection ready for you.

Absolutely... That''s so great that you are right there! We called him up and told him what we were looking for, and he set out to find it. Then We flew to NYC to see him and GOG. Much easier for you since you are there!
Have you decided what it is that you are looking for as far as the cut or the size, etc...???

He absolutely will do business in person, you just need to call ahead for an appointment. I''ve met him in person, he''s wonderful.

I am more concerned with how sparkly it is. Color is important too. Does anyone know the difference between the antique and other cushion cuts? I didn''t know there is a variety. 2.5 plus would be nice.

Sparkles... What kind do you like? The big bold chunky sparkles? or more smaller flashes? Mkes a difference. Antiques stones will be the bold kind...

You can do MONTHS of research on the different types of cushions. Antique, cushion brilliant, cushion modified brilliant, etc.

The difference between CB and CMB is generally easy, as CMB look more like radiants with a "crushed ice" look to them. As for antique vs. cushion b, there are literally hundreds of variations. My best suggestion is let Mark see what he can find in your size range and then USE YOUR EYES to see what you like.

Not true neat. There are cushion modified with old world chunky flashes too.

Again, very useful advice! I love the antique cushions with the chunky facets - hands down.
