Diamond is purchased(!), now onto the setting. Our jeweler needs our idea by Tuesday to get started on the CAD so we can have the ring in time for engagement (8/1).

We want:
- Clean/sleek/modern/striking
- "Simple" solitaire, minimal metal (want the diamond to be the focus, not the ring)
- Some uniqueness and personality (not too "standard" or traditional)

It's been kinda tough to find a balance between our desire for "simple/minimal" and "non-standard/non-traditional," but I think the way to do this might be the NESW orientation for the prongs. We really like rings in which the prongs flow organically from the shank, and a NESW might be the perfect "twist" to make her ring look a little more unique. (She does not want to add a wedding band, so the shape interference with a wedding band is not a concern.)

Here is what we are currently thinking of sending to our jeweler as a model: http://www.serendipitydiamonds.co.uk/product/R1D002

Setting will be platinum; diamond is round 1.52 F VS2 XXX H&A; her ring size is 3.5.

Thoughts or suggestions?

I definitely think providing pictures of what you want is the clearest way to communicate to the ring maker. I would also be sure I had seen the person's work to know they make similar kinds of rings and that you approve of the quality and finish. Sometimes I think it is best to just buy the example ring as you know exactly what you'd be getting. The only thing I will add is that if she doesn't want to wear a wedding band, I'd personally want a ring that looked more stand-alone than the example you posted. Because she will forever be asked when she is getting married if she wears that particular ring without a wedding band!

Thanks; yeah, I see the value in just buying the example, but I think we may want the flexibility to make our own tweaks. Very confident in the jeweler.

I know...people may always think she is engaged (instead of married), but this is the look of a ring that she likes. She doesn't care about traditions or following the "rules," so I think she'll be fine dealing with the questions. If she ever does get annoyed with it and decides she'd rather have something that looks more like she is married, we can always figure out a band to add.

Any other thoughts?
