I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond :)

So...long story short....$6k - $10k budget, but would rather stay around the $8k mark. Admittedly I'm not very knowledgeable about diamonds, but I would like the best diamond for the money. Must be eye clean and nice and shiny. I remember the very first ring I bought the GF and shortly after returned..her nickname for the ring was frog eggs, because you could see the imperfections very easily. Yes it was that bad. In any case, it must be eye clean. Prefer .9 - 1ct or bigger if possible.

For the setting, she really like Pave settings. I think diamonds 3/4 around the band would work. What I don't want is to have the band to skinny or small, compared to the center stone. I want the proportions to look right.

I was planning on proposing on Christmas eve...so I would like to place the order ASAP. Prefer the diamond and setting came from the same place.

Help???? Suggestions??

HI:

Has she shown you pictures of settings she likes? Your description is general...pictures help with specifics...

cheers--Shaorn

Yes she has shown me rings in person at stores...over the years lol...she likes a solitaire style with diamonds going around the band. This is one that I was looking at...

What I noticed were the claws that are holding the center diamond on look very thick and noticeable if that makes sense? Not sure if its just the picture, but I'm not sure if I like that.

Whats the difference with this one? The claws holding the center diamond on look smaller on this setting, or is it just me?

OMG I'm feeling really overwhelmed!

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

JA should be able to combine the head from the second one with the shank of the first.

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

Has the same head you didn't like earlier. Pretty, but I prefer the "Harmony" from WF.

Actually I think I agree with you...I wasn't so sure about the side profile of that ring I just posted. I like how the sides of the Harmony are smooth..I'm just not sure about that extra piece connecting the prongs around the center diamond

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

How is White Flash quality compared to James Allen? Is the quality better at one over the other?

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

I have always loved this setting
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/legato-sleek-line-pave-diamond-engagement-ring-422.htm

Someone else just recently got that setting for a .81 (i may be off by a .02 or so ) round and it just looked beautiful!

or at the higher end of your budget

White flash uses very good melee ( side stones) . i dont know about JA

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

I have seen the JA french cut pave setting IRL before, and I would say it is good for a stock setting, but obviously, it is not in the same league as a custom made piece by a good bench. For pave because it is delicate I think having it custom made by a vendor known for quality work would be ideal. That being said, a custom piece probably won't be done in time for you to get it for your proposal on Christmas eve. My suggestion would be to get a simple 14k solitaire temp setting for now and propose, then let her pick and design her own setting after the proposal.

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

I really don't see a need to go custom. Especially sense it would eat up a fair amount of your budget. I think a well made WF setting would do the job

Thank you for the help...yes I don't think I'm going to go custom. The Harmony from Whiteflash might just be the one. I think its a really nice looking, clean ring.

Now white gold or platinum? Is it worth the extra $500 for platinum?

For the diamond it would be nice to find a 1ct that would work with it

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

10K is defnitely enough to fit platinum in.

That actually provides more stability to the prongs - if the prongs aren't bulkier like the ones you don't like, they usually need a basket holding them together, otherwise they could have an increased risk of loosening and losing the diamond.

Whiteflash is definitely better quality than JA, as long as you don't get a Verragio setting from them. Their WF settings and Ritani settings are really nice.

I'd go ahead and get platinum... but I'm a platinum fan. It's just so heavy and luxurious feeling on your finger.

This setting isn't pave and if she is looking for the pave look this wont supply it. I would go with something more like this:

It's more in line with what you said she wanted and the head is far better looking IMO.

This stone fits nicely in your budget as long as you don't mind a slightly warmer stone. Unless she is really color sensitive, and most people are not, you will never notice the J it will look nice and white. My e-ring is a J and sometimes I think its too white...

A bit more but a higher color and slightly larger. Not enough of a difference that you would notice, but its more of a mind thing rather than a visual thing ;))

+1
If you know she wants a white metal I would go platinum. I agree with mrs w though that that setting isn't pave. So if that's what you are looking for then I wouldn't choose that setting I'd choose the legato. But if she just wants diamonds around the band than that's a fine choice.

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

I think the Harmony setting is gorgeous! I would go for that with an ACA.

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

^^ Thank you very much for your comments and help^^

Both the Harmony and Legato Pave from Whiteflash are very nice...I cannot decide which one I like better.

The diamonds all look like good options, I'll have to look into the differences so I can begin to choose one over the other. I think I've decided that I do want 1ct

HI:

If you decide to work with WF--give them your parameters and let them help you find something. They are very good at what they do!

cheers--Sharon

Re: I would LOVE some help picking out a setting and diamond

Ok I think I've narrowed the setting down to one of these

Its sooooooooo hard to decide!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kinda leaning towards the Whiteflash Harmony. I think I like the basket/head a bit better on this one, and this ring has holes on the back...which is better for cleaning!? (from what I've read).
