I'm concerned the cut isn't ex. You think she will notice?? I need some help from you pros!

Thanks legends - yewwww

Not really a fan at all of the numbers. 40.2 pavilion!

Depth 64.2 %
Table 56 %
Crown Angle 38.0°
Crown Height 17.0%
Pavilion Angle 40.2°
Pavilion Depth 42.5%
Star Length 55%
Lower Half 80%
Girdle Slightly Thick to Thick, Faceted, 4.5%

HOnestly, if it were me, I'd drop below E VS1 and go for an excellent cut. I'd bet a lot of things that a really nicely cut F/G VS2/SI1 is going to look just as white and sparkle better than a less than ideal cut E VS1. The 64 depth and thicker girdle probably also means it is facing up a bit small in diameter for it's weight.

Agreed, go for a better cut.

It could work, but it faces up small for a 1.5.

Thanks all!! Oh well - you win some and lose some!

I guess Abit annoying when the jeweller who is experienced picked it out for me and he's meant to be a family friend!!! Hahaha

how much was it?

Was that plus 2x 0.72s xxx and put into platinum for 25k us

I hope that isn't a rip off on top of a crap stone!!! I should have just gone to blue Nile :(

There's nothing wrong with buying from a B/M if you are more comfortable with it. You will still be in roughly the same boat buying from a drop shipper like BN. You are going to have to know what specs are ideal and weed out stones that are not, same as you would in a store (albeit a little more quickly). If you can and want to, you might see if you can exchange the stone for one with more ideal cut parameters if this is going to bug you. Do you like it when you look at it? Or did you like it until you found out it might not have the best cut? Or did you not like it and were wondering? That could tell you whether to keep or change it.

You should ask to see stones that are GIA or AGS graded and have:

crown angle - 34-35
pavilion angle - 40.6-41
depth- 60-62.3
table size- 54-58

You can also run the numbers on any round stone you are considering through this tool and take a better look at stones scoring around 2 or below and put any stones much over 2 way on the back burner. I think you'd need a person with a truly experienced eye to assess stones much over 2.

...use caution when buying jewelry from a "family friend" -- sometimes they will use "friendship" to take advantage of your trust in them.

It is true that you could have purchased a better cut stone. Is there any way you could return or exchange it for an excellent cut with better numbers? If so, you could post the information of the possible stone(s) on here and the PS'ers will help you pick the best for your money.

If you cannot return or exchange... I hope the diamond is sparkly and looks good to you and your fiance. :))

Well, I'll be the voice of dissent - in general, those are my favourite sorts of proportions for an RB: high crown, correspondingly shallow pav... which usually means GIA VG cut grade.

This stone takes that "sort of proportion" to the extreme - Very, very high crown, very shallow pav. And though face-up diameter is usually one of the sacrifices you can expect to make with this "sort of stone", the depth on this specimen is another extreme, thanks in part to the girdle.

Had you come here and said that you were considering buying it, I'd also have suggested that you keep looking because I wouldn't recommend a stone that deep. Now that you've bought it though, from *just the info on the report* I don't see any reason to assume it's a doozy, or that your family friend bamboozled you and laughed all the way to the bank. It could be very pretty, thick girdle and all. It could be a doozy.
GIA tells us nothing about optical symmetry, and given the type of face-up patterning these sorts of proportions result in (tiny table reflection with arrow-shafts extending almost to the center of the table) poor optical symmetry will yield an obviously chaotic obstruction pattern (the pattern of facets that go black when you lean over it).

The report is from the end of 2011 - has this stone been sitting in their safe or has it been set and worn since the report was issued? I would make the sale contingent on an independent appraisal to verify that the stone is in exactly the condition represented by the report.
