I found a round diamond that I liked in a store the other day. They have a good refund policy and seem like a good store. The GIA dossier:

.55
5.36 x 5.38 x 3.19
Color: I
Clarity: VS1
depth: 59.4
table: 59
Polish and sym are ex.
girdle: thin to med
culet: none
no crown and pavillion angles on the dossier

It''s an "elexese" diamond, just for reference.

I was wondering, first of all, if an "I" color in a platinum setting looks visibly yellow. I need to go check this out at the store with the diamond, but is there a general rule about this? Do different skin colors change this effect?

Also, the diamond was priced at $2000 and the platinum setting $299. The woman at the store brought it down to $1600 and $200. This seems like a great deal, however, I don''t feel qualified to decide this. Assuming that the platinum doesn''t make the ring look too yellow, should I try to get her to go down more, or accept this as a good price? Or just walk away from the ring? If I should try to get a better deal, any ideas how to and how much I should go for?

And does anyone know about insurance? I don''t even know where to begin with that!

Sorry for all the questions, but I feel really lost and overwhelmed! Thanks in advance for any help.

Ask the jeweler to get you Sarin info. Specifically, you want the crown and pavillion angles. They should be able to get the info with a phone call. Once you have that, you can crunch the Cut Adviser and see how it scores. If you can't get angles, crown and pavillion %'s can be used, but the results are less accurate.

If you already have HomeOwner's or Renter's insurance you can add a jewelry rider to cover the new ring. There are several jewelry insurance companies as well. Chubb is one that pops to mind. Search past threads for info on other people's experiences and company names.
