With this setting:

I've been looking for a good quality ~1/2 carat with soiltaire setting. This is below my budget, but looks good (at least I think it does) so I was making sure with people who actually know what they are talking about. I can't see the flaws on the diamond (I'm new to this) so if you can point it out, that'd be great. Thanks for the input.

I think the diamond and setting are both just fine! But since you say it is under budget, I seriously would encourage you to look for a .5.

Vanman,

This looks awesome... but if you''ve got budget left over, do you you wnat to use it? What is your budget? I was looking around for something closer to that .5 carat but didn''t want to go way over your goal...

Here''s the deal: I''m looking to spend a total of $2,000. But I don''t know what setting my g/f really wants. It''s going to be a surprise, when I go visit her while she''s studying abroad. So I wanted to get a simple solitaire setting to begin with and maybe upgrade if she wants. I also am planning on buying the wedding band with this $2,000, so a simple solitaire (like the one I''ve picked out) with a little more impressive band seems to make it about $2k. I do not have the $2k all right now, I will get it come Decemberish (maybe Jan.), and I really am looking to get the e-ring by mid-Oct, so I can take it with me. She wears a 5-5 1/2 ring and she''s 5 feet tall, so she needs something relatively small (she''s not real flashy :)
Can you tell me what is wrong with the diamond? I literally see no problem with it, other then the color (but at 40x I''ll live with it). I''m real new to looking at diamonds, so if you can help me see what I''m looking for, it would be greatly appreciated.

DiamondSeeker:

I honestly don''t see a difference in the diamonds. There is a difference in color, but not any drastic changes. I know that the one you showed is bigger, but almost negligible. What am I missing?

I think it is a lovely diamond. I just think .5 is a nicer size for an e-ring if you can swing it. I didn''t see any H SI1 diamonds in the .5 size, which would bring down the price a little.

What style of wedding band were you thinking of?

Solitaire to start and maybe upgrade in a few months

wedding band...do you mean a plain wg band or one with diamonds?

Vanman,

there''s nothing wrong with your diamond : ) we just heard you had some money left over and thought you could go bigger... but if you''re thinking about swapping out the setting later on, and including the wedding band in that budget, than you''re doing just great : )

congratulations, and hope everything goes well this winter!

I was thinking about getting a band, with diamonds to make it a set. I want to get a whole ring set, so that when she gets back we can go together and get wedding bands.

Well, I'm a little confused about what you mean. You want a plain tiffany setting for the e-ring now, and you'll wait until later to let her go shopping for wedding bands with you. So you don't know how much the wedding band might be or exactly what style it would be. Do I have that right? (The reason I was asking is that I just saw a great deal on a wg wedding band with diamonds that I was thinking of getting myself, but I was thinking of telling you!)

Yeah, I don''t know what type of bands she wants. I''ll gladly look at any, but I think I''d like her to look to pick them out, but I''m not entirely sure

Well, I think it's a terrific idea to let her go with you to pick one out. You just have to be careful to get good quality at a good price, and that isn't easy to do other than online. But anyway, here is another stone that I think would be better (it's 5.0mm anyway):

I personally would divide my budget of $2000 this way: at least $1000 for the diamond, 200 for the setting, and then that leaves $800 for the wedding band. (And you can get a diamond wedding band for less than $800 in wg anyway. So I'd really probably go at least $1200. on the diamond.).

I may be accused of being frugal here, but if you come in under budget, why not??? Especially if your going to switch out the setting in the future. For my e-ring we spent FAR LESS than we can afford simply because I can''t wear a big diamond with my work. As much as I LOVE diamonds, a young couple frequently has other expenses to spend that extra $500 on. So I say, go for it! It''s beautiful, and congratulations on your future engagement! I am sure she will love the ring as much as she loves you.

thanks brt

I''m going to look for a bigger diamond, so we''ll see if I can convince myself to go more expensive
