So I was just browsing over different sizes and decided to sacrifice carat for price. Well, here is a 3/4 carat, perfect price, almost perfect form, etc. I really wanted the full 1 carat, but I think I was getting too picky about color/clarity. Should I keep looking for the 1 carat? Opinions please!

I was reading your other thread, and I thought you were understanding the advantage of buying in-house ideal cut stones from verndors such as WhiteFlash, Good Old Gold, or Wink''s Infinity diamonds. Are you really stuck on D VVS1? Seriously, you would not be able to tell the difference in D and E color, and VS1 won''t have inclusions that you or I can see with a loupe most of the time.

It certainly looks fine, but as DS said you CAN get that 1 carat if you''ll sacrifice a bit on color and clarity, which you''ll never notice.

And just FYI, Bluenile DOES NOT have an upgrade policy, so make sure this stone is for keeps if you are buying from them.

::sigh:: Thanks you guys! This is just the advice that I needed to hear. I just really want an Excellent diamond for her, but I hate the pictures of the diamonds at 10x because I can see the inclusions. I don''t want to be looking at the diamond and see anything as far as noticeable imperfections. I will hold out on this one in hopes for a bigger one.

Unless you walk around with a loupe attached to you eye or a microscope in your pocket it''ll be pretty hard to notice inclusions in the VS category and even in an eye-clean S. There can be small inclusions that are off to the side, hidden by prongs or so tiny they are difficult to see without magnification. And the human eye can only pick up so much. When a D E and F are placed next to each other most people can see a difference. But once set most people cannot see warmth in a G and higher. There are always those who can spot color perfectly and those who love a D and nothing else will do. But those folks better have a big budget.

I have yet to hear from a lady-in-waiting (gal hoping to be presented with an engagement ring) who would prefer a small D VVS1 over a nice-sized-slightly-lower-in-color-and-clarity diamond (with the same ideal cut of course).

Just my opinion. I understand your desire for the best of the best.

I have a D diamond and wish I would have gotten an F in order to get a bigger diamond!!! Just my 2 cents!!

Go for the bigger diamond. As long as you stick with the excellent cut and no naked eye inclusions you and your FI will be VERY happy.

that''s exactly what I was looking to hear

You are a bit too picky about color and clarity. IMO the sweet spot is F VS2. That still puts you in the whitest color range and inclusions in a VS2 are almost never visible without a loupe. Do you know how quickly diamonds get dirty? Lotions, soaps, skin oils all cling to them. I read once that putting a thumbprint on the table of a D was the equivalent of bringing it down to an E. So, you clean your diamond every morning, but after a few hours, it really doesn''t matter. So, as a practical matter, an F VS2 is all you really should pay for. Anything higher than that just won''t be noticable to anyone.

i would have to agree, i''m still relatively new to ps, but i''ve seen so many diamonds here that are so well cut that you can''t tell that they are si, even more so if they are vs

unless your future fi would really be bothered the diamond not being "perfect", vvs is still not perfect, then i would go for the vs

just my two cents of course.

agreed!

I did a poll on here months ago about the 4C''s. The poll disappeared, but the thread is still around. Hands down, women preferred a larger stone, so long as it was well-cut and eye clean. Go as big as you can (w/in budget of course) without sacrificing the cut or eye-cleanliness. Women especially like to hit the 1ct mark. I believe the average on PS worked out to be 1.01ct!

Go bigger! No one will ever see the difference you would pay for in color or clarity, but they WILL see a difference in SIZE!!! I have an H VS2 and would never bother paying for anything higher in a round brilliant. Here is a picture of it.

Ditto Kelli. I originally thought that my order of priorities for a diamond was clarity, carat, color, cut. Now it is almost the opposite (clarity and color are tied after cut and carat). Cut makes the stone sparkle and people notice size right away.

I personally think that a D VVS1 is a bit overkill but having that high of a grade in those two categories really floats some people''s boats.

My ideal would be a F/VS1. I know many PSers typically recommend a G or H / Eye Clean SI1. In my mind, I just can't go down to SI1 and I am not sure if I convinced myself that I am happy with a G even though I couldn't see much of a difference IRL. I have a friend with a 0.9x ct D VVS1 and she probably wishes she got something a little bigger or saved some money with slightly lower color and clarity. Her ring is so dirty most of the time that no one can tell it is a D VVS1 anyways :)

You just have to decide what is the right balance for you and what is available within your budget and timeframe.

Why oh why is mind clean so important?!?

Fixed the links for you - You will get more answers if you get the data from the virtual certs and post them instead of people having to copy the link and then paste it, and then get the carat weight and GIA report # to plug in. I will comment on the JA stones though b/c those link directly...

Risk for steep deep and table bigger than preferred. would not bother getting more info as the JA AGS0 looks good.
