The past few weeks have been a headache! My girlfriend (soon to be fiance) only wants a princess cut above 1.5 carats. I've seen a few, nothing great, and jewelers have been trying to get me some from their dealers (but I would have to commit to buying them buy paying first without seeing). I now hold a 1.622 C princess cut GIA cert with these dimensions:

6.39*6.33*4.56.
G
VVS1
P: VG S: G
Table: 78%, depth 71.4%
GIRDLE: VERY THICK TO EX. THICK.

I have a sinking feeling ... I may have made only a decent choice. The rock was $14k.

To the resident experts here... without seeing the diamond, are these specs ok? I know the girdle is not ideal by any means... and I do not know why I went against what I know regarding princess cuts, and still purchased the rock anyway!?

Please shed some insight with me, what are your thoughts about this diamond's specs?

Thank you, PS!

I'm no princess expert so I'll let other chime in on the potential optics, but a girdle that thick is going to hide weight where it can't be seen in the spread, so the face up is going to be smaller than a normal princess of that size.

^yeah, I definitely know that (thicker girdle = smaller spread, but from what I read here girdles don't affect sparkle?) I want the perfect ring for her and she deserves it (I even went over my budget a bit). The thing that is gets me is that girdle. Does it affect the view of the princess cut looking onto the table? I read with rounds, a thick girdle like that will cause the fish eye, and I'm not sure how it affects princess.

Also, what is the GENERAL consensus regarding table %? I know AGS came up with their "ideal" proportions, but it seems like not many people have diamonds of that quality.

This whole process has been daunting on me. I now understand how men feel when they get diamonds for their future wives.

Perhaps I should *try* to take a picture...

The only other princess I was considering was a

1.50 F VVS1 GIA
EX/EX polish sym
6.13x6.15x4.76
slightly thick girdle
table 70%
depth 75%, but the other dealer wanted more for this diamond. :(sad

Yes I know this diamond named above seems like the better of the two, but I couldn't see how they perform side by side.

with princess cuts you can't really go by the numbers...but the table is huge and the girdle may be hiding some weight. perhaps see if your jeweler can call in some AGS0s?

if you are open to online options let us know and we can recommend some stones.

I don't know if you can return it, but I thought I would throw some options out at you:)

Both have larger spreads than your current stone

from GOG

again larger spread than your current stone

I think any of these stone would present a better option for you if you can return :wink2:

I'm not sure if exchanging is an option...I'll have to find out.

Anyone near San Diego, CA that may have a ideal scope or ASET that I could use??

Re: I swear I did my research! ***PHOTOS ADDED***

do these photos I took tell you experts anything about the diamond?

it turns out the people I am dealing with will either let me return or exchange it! BUT what are your opinions based on these photos??

Or you can ask for an independent appraiser recommendation and then call them to see if they have an ASET.

I gotta tell you though, with that flat crown and huge table... I'm not planning to be wowed.

This one is lovely: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9244/ And 3k cheaper!

in the 2nd pic you are getting a lot of glare because the table is so large. personally, i prefer a princess with a smaller table. with your budget, you can get an AGS0...that is what I would recommend.

I'm not a fan of the large flat table, I would return it, but you are the one that has to be happy with it :twirl:

Do you really want a great stone? Then return that and start over HERE! If you order from online out of state, you avoid sales tax for one thing. And you can find a better cut stone with a better spread. You are paying a lot for VVS when VS1 is extemely clean and many VS2's are as well. You can go larger in size and get nice clarity without overpaying for VVS.

I learned a lot from this site, and my girlfriend learned a lot from me. Thanks to the info on this site, I confidently returned that diamond and my girlfriend was able to see with her own eyes how awesome a RB is compared to a princess! Now The search continues! Thanks again PS!

Fantastic!!! Let us know if we can help! Stick to GIA Excellent cut only and come and post all the numbers here before buying. GIA excellent is a broad range and some stones are much better than others! AGS Ideal cut is great, too, but they aren't as plentiful as GIA graded stones.

Actually, GIA doesn't grade cut quality for the princess shape. They only give polish & symmetry assessments, which have nothing to do with performance.

Seeing the data and photos I strongly agree with the advice you've received. AGS0 princess cuts could be a good start, but only about 2% of diamonds sold in the USA have AGSL reports, and a tiny fraction of that number is princess cuts, but some PS sellers do offer a selection. The grade is wide, in my opinion, but it's a huge improvement over no performance standard whatsoever.

Alternately, if you can find an expert you trust to deliver the highest possible cut quality the laboratory report is secondary to his/her ability to source something fantastic.

I think DS gave this advice because he is switching to a RB search, not looking at princesses anymore.

Right you are. That's what I get for skimming on a Saturday AM. Thanks for the redirect ~ good advice from ds2006.
