When I called last night, she sort of mentioned off-hand that she wasn''t feeling well...she had a little bit of a fever and her belly hurt a little. Those symptoms worried me, though, and I told her maybe she should reconsider going away for the weekend - she was planning a trip to our family''s vacation home on a remote island served by a ferry that only runs twice a day and minimal EMS. Later on I felt bad about possibly ruining her weekend for nothing, so I told her to call me in the morning and see if she felt better. This morning, her fever was gone but she still had some pain in her belly when she pressed on it. I told her to see her doctor, but of course he wasn''t seeing patients on Saturday of a long weekend, so he told her to go to the ER.

She got a CAT scan and they found an abscess on her colon. So now she''s in the hospital on IV antibiotics, and might possibly need surgery. Luckily, the abscess was pretty small since they caught it early, and she''s pretty healthy otherwise, so she has a good chance of avoiding surgery.

Even though I know that this could have been far worse, it''s still upsetting. I work in a hospital and I''ve seen first-hand all the things that can go wrong! I just feel bad that I can''t be there to check up on her. Fiance''s going by tonight to make sure everything is done correctly and to bring her some flowers though, which helps. She''s in good spirits, too. When I called, she said "Hey, if it weren''t for you, I''d be sitting on the beach sipping a gin and tonic right now!"

Well wishes going out to your mom! She''s lucky to have you for a daughter.

Best wishes to you both!

Basil-

I know you can't be by her side right now, but I am sure she understands, given your current predicament!! This situation could have turned out COMPLETELY different, as you and I both know, and I am sure she is very grateful. I am so glad she listened to you! I have had this happen to me several times with my family /friends (I am an RN/NP). For instance, my dad had a "rash" on his arm a few months ago that he wasn't really concerned about on his own, but when I came over and saw it, I thought it looked suspicious and told him to see his dr right away. Turned out to be cellulitis!!!

So, the bottom line is, trust your gut (and your medical training)!!!

I hope your mom feels better very soon!

Oh my goodness! I''m sure you are really glad you followed up on it! Thank goodness it was caught so early, and of course I''m sending prayers for your mom.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and prayers!

She is doing well today, but they want to keep her in the hospital until Tuesday. They have advanced her to a clear liquid diet, so she''s sort of frustrated with that. She doesn''t feel too badly, so she''s just kind of bored and bummed about missing out on a holiday weekend. Weirdly, one of her work pals was admitted in the room across the hall, so they''ve been walking the floors together with their IV poles to keep themselves occupied!

I''m extremely grateful that she went to the hospital when she did, though. I shudder to think what could have happened if she didn''t!

I''m glad to hear she is doing well basil. And having her work buddy across the hall must be fun for her. Thanks for checking in with us!!!

prayers outgoing
glad to hear she is doing better.

Even though it''s disappointing for her to not be on the beach with gin and tonics, on the holiday weekend, at least she is in the "right" place and getting help and treatment.

Prayers for any and all people are standard...

Best wishes for her speedy recovery.

I''m glad to hear you convinced her to go to the ER! Prayers outgoing.

She''s home! Yeay! She just has another week of antibiotics and get another CAT scan in a few weeks to make sure it''s gone. I''m so relieved.

And anyway, not to brag, but fiance went by to see her today and make sure she was all set up to go home. All the nurses and other patients were commenting to her on how cute he was and how sweet he was to check in all the time! What a sweetie

Basil, I''m so glad to see the good news about your mom coming home! And your fiance sounds like a real doll!!

Basil I wasn''t on all weekend and didn''t see the thread till now - I''m so glad to hear your mom is home again. Big hugs to her from us!

I''m glad your mom is doing so well. Going to the hospital before it got bad was the best decision! She can have her coctails after she finishes her antibiotics.
