I said I wouldn't do this, but... HCA 1.1 v HCA 1.4 ?

Hey all,

I always said to myself I wouldn't do this sort of thread but, well, here we are... :?

It's a super quick question, really.

I am trying to match a stone to an HCA 0.9 (Ex Ex Ex Ex) and have two stones in the running:

Stone 1
Table %: 55.2
Depth %: 62.0
Crown Angle: 34.2
Pav Angle: 40.9
HCA 1.4
Light Return - Excellent
Fire - Excellent
Scintillation - Very Good
Spread - Very Good

Stone 2
Table %: 55.8
Depth %: 61.4
Crown Angle: 34.3
Pav Angle: 40.8
HCA 1.1
Light Return - Excellent
Fire - Excellent
Scintillation - Excellent
Spread - Very Good

(That's all the info you're getting ;) lol  so please don't post up links to the stones if you know what they are! )

Now, I know that HCA is not a selection tool, more a rejection tool :read: but I can't see the HCA 1.4 stone before I commit to it so can't do a visual assessment, but it is somewhat cheaper than the HCA 1.1 stone.

Given that they are both relatively similar and both have great HCA scores, is it likely that the HCA 1.4 stone's Very Good scintillation will look markedly different to the HCA 1.1 stone's Excellent scintillation?

Would the HCA 1.4 Ex Ex VG VG stone look markedly different to the HCA 0.9 Ex Ex Ex Ex stone?

Or am I worrying over nothing, which I fully expect I might be?! :?

Please feel free to chastise me for my begging thread, I just need a comforting hand to confirm I am being silly!  lol

Many thanks in advance!!

Hi there Ooosh, unless those are CBI stones, I would not trade yours in for a non CBI. They really are something to behold and with a smaller stone, having superior cut and color/specs that you chose is something special. You've been spoilt somewhat and maybe you think you can get something bigger that's slightly outside of superideal, but I think you'll be disappointed in the end. :naughty: But prove me wrong. Go ahead with this new scheme and I'll happily eat crow if I'm wrong. I'm so curious how this will play out...thank you for such an interesting journey!

I'll be posting my own new purchase soon, but don't have much by way to show you.

You said you are going to match it to another stone. Are you trying to make studs? If so, pick the one with a diameter closer to your current diamond. Both in your opening post are fine.

OOoops :cheeky: Sorry if I read your post wrong! over tired mama.

lol No worries, we have all been there!

thecat had it right ;)

Thanks for your input, I figured they were both great options but it's just hesitancy because I can't see one of them!

I think the scintillation of Stone 1 is Very Good instead of Excellent due to the pavilion being 40.9. Had it been 40.8, the scintillation would have been Excellent. 40.9 shouldn't really affect performance. So both are fine.

If they are both the same diameter, pick the one you can see to have peace of mind.

Thanks for your thoughts, thecat, it's much appreciated.

The discussion is now pretty much moot as someone has bought them in the time between me getting up this morning, checking they were still available on my phone, then logging onto the proper computer to buy them... :wall:

My mood was not helped by an alternative pair of stones then not being able to be ordered because I'm not in the USA

This day is not going well.

Personally, think I'd also have to consider the proportions of the stone as well. Table size, % crown height, crown angle, LGF, and stars. I'd want a matched pair to look identical, in case I wanted to use them side-by-side or as sides in a 3-stone, or some other use that puts them adjacent to each other.

You will find a more matching one soon. Cheer up, Shiny :wavey:

If those diamonds were perfectly symmetrical and had the same minor facet proportions, you literally would not able to tell them apart with your eyes alone. The HCA should not be used like that. HCA should really have a color code with it. <2 = Green for Go ahead investigate more. Between 2-3 =yellow -proceed with caution, stop if possible. >3 = red stop do not enter sign.

Thanks for the advice, I know that HCA should be a rejection tool not a selection tool but it's difficult to not get hung up on the numbers :? lol

This is a good point, thanks for reminding me! :read:
