We live within 25 miles of it, and when we moved into this town one of the pieces of paperwork we received was a recommendation to purchased PI tablets. Most of the pharmacies here carry them. Residents living within 5 miles of the plant are automatically issued PI tablets when they move in.
I live 45 minutes from here.. but had not even considered the iodide pills. My bil works for nuclear power plants across the world, as does his girlfriend who is a nuclear physicist.. I'll have to get his perspective on this.
Let me know what they say, I'm interested! But there was an article in the press a couple of days ago that mentioned that plant...and that isn't not even in the 10 vulnerable in the US even though it's on the water and near a major fault. Apparently they plan for that.
I do think the paranoia can be a bit much, but as others have said, what's $20 for peace of mind? I already feel better that we have extra water in the house, and we're working on completing the big earthquake kit this week. We're picking up a bit of plastic covering and duct tape today for the windows, and I'm thinking about buying some sort of heater that isn't electric powered, but haven't looked into any options yet. Obviously windows shattering in an earthquake is a definite possibility, and would imagine glassmakers would have their wares shattered too, so not much in the hopes of getting them replaced fast!
