I''m preparing to buy a round 2.0 ct on Tacori platnium setting. The sales associate highly recommended I color because the yellow/discolor in J will show against the platnium setting. She didn''t have any Js to show me the difference.

Is this true or is she trying to make a few extra bucks? I plan to compare the two colors.

Thanks in advance for you replies!

Here ya go, huge thread on PS''ers rings - J colour in Platinum.
I think she is trying to make a few extra $$

You can go with the J if you want to save some bucks.

When set, a diamond tends to take on the color of the metal, which in platinum''s case is icy white. So I don''t think you''ll notice the yellowness of a "J," much less that of an "I," once it''s in a ring.

I have seen some Js that face up pretty white.

I would strongly agree with SA 99.5 percent of the time. I don''t want to make a "blanket" statement, so I will say there are a small percetage of diamonds that may be the exception to the rule. But, I recommend doing a comparison for yourself, as this is a highly opinionated subject.

Snoop, if your decision were between say an H and a J, i think there would be a harder decision here. But as was mentioned, many will find it very near impossible to notice the difference between I and J once mounted.
The easiest way to see colour is from the pavillion up - and as A very smart and funny person once told me, at the moment there isn''t a trend towards mounting diamonds this way, unless a woman gets a divorce and wants to use the ring as a weapon!

But anyway, I have totally digressed - I believe in your situation, the fact that the SA didn''t have a J to compare for you, means she was simply trying to sell you what she Did have on hand.
have you checked out the PS''ers rings with J stones?
Do let us know what you think!

Indeed. It is always best to compare for yourself as individual colour perception varies. There are many here as the above thread shows which have even sizeable diamonds of J colour in platinum settings, but it is always best to try to see where your own preference lies.

I wll tell you that Tiffany does not sell below I color in diamonds. Some people love a warmer colored diamond and that is wonderful for them because they will save money. But when I did some color comparisons at a jeweler who let me take the stones outside, J colored stones did appear to be more tinted than I color to me. My opinion is that I would rather have a 1.8 ct. I color stone than a 2.0 ct. J color. But there are lots of people here who would choose size over color and clarity.

LOL!

I will say though, that I was not on a mission to sacrifice clarity or color for size, but I didn''t want to pay for anything over G-H bc no one will ever know but me and other Pser''s. And in fairness, I have seen some really bad I''s and J''s, and when I found my J, I was convinced (still am

) That it was mis-graded. I''m sure it wasn''t and some could tell, but I couldn''t when it was next to an H... Just find a well cut stone and you will be fine!

Okay, Ellen and I are the only two people on here for whom size is not number one. Is that better?

Whether or not the J color will show depends largly on the cut quality of her J stone (that she doesn''t have). The J stones she has access to may be quite yellow. Maybe the difference in color would be slight enough to you that you prefer the J.

There are some gorgeous I, J and K stones here. The pictures of these excellent cut stones are amazing. I have never seen those colors at that quality in person, so I don''t know how much warmth you can actually see, but they face up pretty white.

Whatever amount of warmth you can see is totally personal preference. For my ering, I didn''t want to drop below G (I got an F); I could have gotten a much larger stone, but the warmth (even if only seen from certain angles) would have bothered me (though I wouldn''t mind a warm diamond for a RHR or pendant, but for my ering I wanted icy white). Others prefer some warmth in their stone. Others don''t mind the warmth to get a bigger stone.

I think you really should see the difference yourself to see what your preference is.

Hmmm... I would probably go with the "I", but I''m color-sensitive.

As long as the J is well cut I wouldn''t have a problem with it. I''ve seen some really nice Js... I''ve also seen some really awful ones too.

I agree, H vs. J would be more of an issue for me. I vs. J, well, it would just depend on the stone. Whichever was a better cut. I've had a J and now a K. So I'm not about to sit here and tell anyone that I have a problem with J's.

IF they are well cut, I think they are the way to go for many of us size-lovers.

Honestly, if $ was no object (.....I'd of coarse still be the bargain hunter that I have always been) I'd go for the biggest I or J I could get my hands on. AS LONG AS it was V*E*R*Y well cut.

E.T.A. I just wanted to add that the "color" of my J never bothered me really. This K took some getting used to but now I do love it. Just wanted to add that. I could NOT see a color difference between my I colored pendant and my J color ring.
